I like to pocket carry rather than a pouch or anything. I currently have a Samsung Rugby and it is a bit bulky. Are there any slim yet sturdy phones out there for the AT&T network that are suitable for pocket carry?

iPhone 4 is shockingly slim. I pocket carry mine and you can't tell it is there.

    .... I should add...
it's the best phone on the market to date, due to the abundance of available apps, the ease of use, general functionality and, well, it's nice to look at.

will I have any problems with it if it is in my pocket with my loose change and pen knife?

I wouldn't carry it without some protection. The sides are aluminum and the front and back are both glass so it is easily made of the best materials on any phone. That said a knife and change will wear on anything. You could use one of these:

The iPhone is the greatest thing since sliced bread. Don't know what I would do without it.

Probably not. The edge is stainless steel, and the front and back are hardened glass. You might have to worry about your phone scratching your knife.

I just have a "bumper" on mine (to protect from falls, not pocket contents), and often carry it in the same pocket as my keychain, and sometimes a knife. Nary a scratch yet!

I pocket carry an Atrix from AT&T, comparable to the iPhone. Still looking for a good case. Maybe a golla phone wallet. Those saddlebag pouches are tempting as well.

You could always just walk into an AT&T store and see what they have (that's what I would do). Then you'll know what will fit in your pocket.

This is my recommendation as well; AT&T's version is the Captivate, and it is a great phone. Without a case it is unnoticeable in my front pockets. It fits perfectly in the Saddleback Leather small gadget pouch that jsmitty1967 recommended as well, though for pocket carry the thick leather does bulk it up quite a bit.
