    Lets see your pumpgun.

    First tube was birdshot
Second was full power 00 buck (my hd load)
Last two rounds were 3" magnum.

For me nothing beats the relibility of a pump action 12ga shotgun.
They can be used for anything from lockpicking to dove hunting to home defense.

Mine is a Mossberg 590 Marinecote, affectionately known as "Thumper." No pics, sadly. But we go waaay back.

I was in El Lay when the Rodney King riots broke out. I (and a few million Angelinos) immediately raced to the local gun shop, only to learn that Kalifornia's waiting period law wasn't exactly the smartest thing the state ever did (and trust me, that's saying something). So I got to spend a few days smelling the smoke and packing a handgun around the house, while looters trashed the nearby liquor store and burned down the corner bodega. Fun times... NOT.

What most people forget is, there were actually two King trials, the local criminal trial (which set off all the burning and looting when the four cops were acquitted) and the Federal civil rights trial, several months later. By then, I'd taken possession of Thumper and several boxes of buckshot. Thankfully, local law enforcement were a little more prepared (think D-Day), and while two of the four cops were acquitted, the response was relatively uneventful.

Thumper and I have been pretty close since then. :D

    I have two shotguns:

    1) Mossberg Silver Reserve Sporting O/U - 28" ported barrel that I use only for sporting clays. Not a high end gun. But, far too nice to take into the field.

    2) Remington Supermag Express - This is my "all purpose" firearm. I use it for clays, deer hunting, bird hunting and home protection. It's 3.5" chambered so I can handle the big loads. I have three barrels with it: 28" ribbed for bird hunting and clays; 20" smooth bore slug barrel with iron sights; 20" fully rifled slug barrel that only shoots sabot slugs that I use for deer hunting.

I keep the 20" smooth bore on my 870 when not used in the field for home defense and I alternate between 00 buck and slugs. Still has the wood stock on it as I don't like pistol grips. If the wood wears out or gets damaged, I'm going to get the synthetic stock and pump grip.

First round is 00 buck. Second is slug. I like shot for scatter. But, I also like having slugs loaded too. The 00 for scatter from quick fire and if needed, I can follow up with a more precise shot with a slug after they've been injured. Slugs are a heavier and can punch through walls if need be easier than shot.

Why not run slugs on a side saddle?

Home defense, I'd rather not have to deal with manually attempting to load a different round. Buck/slug/buck/slug/buck with 2.75" shells. Since I don't want tactical because of multipurpose, I may put a stock sleeve on. But, five rounds should generally be enough. If not, I will grab a handful of whatever is closest and then don't worry.

Honestly, that is the dumbest excuse I've heard in a long time.

You dont want to deal with manual manipulation of your shotgun, but think it would be easy to remember if you have 00 or a slug in the chamber?

You remember patterns. If in tight quarters, under duress and try loading single shells into a shotgun, tell me how you fair. It's a lot harder than you think. Ask/look around, it's very common to alternate between slugs and shot.
