I actually got in the habit of a pocket notebook way back in basic army training 1992 was mandatory we always had a pocket notebook and pen as with most folks that had military service

Working as ships agent I kept one every day for last 20 years as boarding the ships have to record the ships arrival and sailing conditions fuel, water, drafts, tonnages loaded and working and transit times, still have every note book ever used

Today still carry a pocket notebook and add sometimes or next to in my brief case a stuff sheath for travel receipts business cards and whatnot, keep an old school autopoint pencil for that one

My day to day office and meeting note book is now a medium sized leuchtturm notebook and a kuru toga pencil with slip case to protect the point, nice size when carrying with my iPad for meetings

Am left handed so have always gravitated towards bound notebooks and pencils due to the awkward writing style of being a leftie

Well, you saved me money, & cost me money! I was just about to pull the trigger on a leather cover, and revisited this thread. Now, I've got one of these in camo on the way!

Yea man I have a leather one and this one is waayyyy better, lighter, tougher and thinner, I don't understand the obsession with leather. I mean I like it, but not for every use, the recycled firefighter were just over done and a bit sloppy looking to me, otherwise ant much else outthere I googled and googled it

although this stays in my edc bag, it will fit in a cargo pocket. it's the maxped 4" x 6" notebook cover. inside:
    ritr 4" x 6" notebook
    fisher bullet space pen
    yellow highlighter
stainless steel sharpie fine point pen
zebra m-301 mechanical pencil (wanna get the m-701 as a replacement)
pen-style eraser (hate the erasers on mechanical pencils)
usb drive with important info; extra lead for pencil

behind the writing utensils in the upper compartment is a small pocket calendar. my dentist gives these to me during my december visit every year (for the following calendar year). it's nice to have a non-digital version...just in case.

Texasshipagent - Alldayruckoff says you can carry 2 field notes in this. If so, have you done that yet? Any problems with 2 field notes at one time?

I currently have an RF Inspector too, but require 2 field notes at one time. Thus, potentially looking see what else it out there.

No problem fits good just keep in mind it stuff waxed canvas like a Filson jacket but leave it in your back pocket a bit riding around in the car etc will break in and soften up nicely

Not to oversell them but great cover am really pleased. I have a nice leather one too but this is more practical for weekends, out and around, outdoor stuff etc.. The leather one is from Odin Leather Works in Texas

Here is with my pocket knife sheath, GEC boys knife and vintage 1920's Eversharp pocket pencil

    @sk33tr

I have the same Gorilla brand USB drive. I love that thing. I accidentally put it through the wash once with no ill effect. I only wish the top had a lanyard or something so I don't lose it.

    The Moleskine Volant

I gotta say, it fits my back pocket without me noticing, and helps everything.
It is kinda expensive, though. I ruined my first one, but I still got it for old stuff I wrote down.
Anything that's basically the same thats cheaper? preferable the same size, too.

Only think cheaper would be a mini composition book can pick up Walmart, unless u find something really obscure

Field notes good option, bigger but thinner and a little wear and tear gives them character :)

Check out jetpens, Goulet pens or European paper all have good selection of note books or can also buy from moleskine USA direct

Ps can also get the old government issue "memorandum" notebooks make some small sizes hard to buy off the shelf but have seen on eBay have a durable green cover and a few different styles either reporter top binding or regular side binding, anyone ever worked in military or government service knows them well, most are small meant to fit in a uniform pocket

Field notes has a special "state fair" edition, that I like. Has facts about whatever state you want, is the right size, but it appears to have less sheets than the moleskine, and they're about the same price. Does jetpens ever have random sales? Or coupon codes? if so, I'd definitely buy some.
