Beating him to it here, but firing a warning shot, using a low power first round, or aiming for a lesser injury is a dangerous prospect. In doing so, you are making a statement that you did not feel you were in mortal danger when you pulled the trigger. This may show a jury that you were intending to intimidate someone rather than protect yourself.

If you have a gun, and the person does not respond to the visual deterrent or verbal warning, You are in mortal danger. Once they run away, you cannot shoot them either.

As for low power loads, a .22 can be lethal. Ask any cop in a city with gangs. (Not that I would ever use a 22 as a PDW) Bird shot will blow through a door, what do you think that would do to a face? You want non-lethal, use a cricket bat, or pepper spray.

I'm a good shot...when shooting center mass. Not so much on the pinky.

I suspect that people who believe in shooting to injure have a naive grasp of anatomy (and shooting).

Mind you, I am referring to civilian use, not military or police. A sniper has a different urgency to their actions and can choose a target more carefully. The Coast Guard firing a warning shot is doing a different job.

In law school we were told it was cheaper in a lawsuit to pay damages for a death than a permanent injury. That may sound heartless, but it's reality.

Lets not also forget about opening yourself up to a likely civil suit and possibly being stuck paying for some idiots medical bills and supporting his worthless butt.

Firing a "warning shot" is probably illegal in most states, but no one can prove that you missed on purpose.

And why give someone the chance to come back and settle the score?

not only are warning shots illegal in many jurisdictions, but you are responsible for the final resting place of every bullet you launch! if your warning shot takes off a pinky or hits in an arm or leg, it will most probably penetrate through-and-through and end up somewhere you didn't anticipate. You should also consider that a shot through the shoulder, or other limb usually is a crippling shot and not a "flesh wound". don't do it!

If you fire your weapon at an evil doer you should always state under oath that "i fired my weapon in order to stop the defendants illegal action." don't allow yourself to be manipulated into saying you shot to kill or wound or anything else.

Additionally, since handguns aren't all that effective at killing, chances are reasonable that they'll survive, barring a headshot. So you don't really know if your shot will in fact kill the goblin. The best hope is that they just stop doing whatever it was they were doing to make you shoot them in the first place.

I would never think of firing a warning shot. Nor would I shoot to injure or for that matter, shoot to kill. I would shoot to stop (the attacker) and more importantly, shoot to live.
