I'm looking to build a kit around the maxpedition 3x5 notebook holder which features four external pen slots on one side. It has me thinking...I only carry a Parker Jotter with a Fisher insert usually, what other thin tools could fit inside pen slots? Any very thin but usable LED lights? Hand tools? Carriers for smaller objects? Trying to brainstorm what else could go in a pen slot besides a pen.

...Besides a pencil. Beat you wise crackers to it.

The preon 2 is thin and very capable and I like the pen sized screwdrivers.

You can get a ti2 carrier from Mike bond, also, hardware store has pen sized screwdrivers, can take standard driver heads.

I carry an OHP marker, a crew chiefs pencil, a stick eraser, a 6" steel rule and a fenix penlight in mine.
With a Gerber EAB and spare pencil leads in the elastic on the inside.

Thermometer. Some day I'll amuse my coworkers by using it to check water temperature before brewing tea. Or something. All right, it's not particularly useful, but I have one and there was a free pen sized slot...

What kind of tasks do you do daily?

+1 in a pen light like the streamlight stylus. +1 on a screwdriver kit of some kind. +1 on a sharpie.

Another option: tube of spray on hand sanitizer? Might only be needed if you are traveling away from "civilization" regularly but might be nice to have as part of a FAK.

This kit is almost exclusively an admin kit I'll be using at work, at conferences, or when I'm running charity events and handling paperwork. I already have a Maxpedition Micro full of odds and ends, this kit meanwhile will be more of a lightweight, low-profile affair. No extra weight whenever possible, just a few durable tools and implements that could come in handy. I'm seeking pen-shaped objects for the external slots because it would make the kit seem more low-key to onlookers, rather than something with fobs and carabiners hanging all over it.

Besides it's intended purpose, liquid hand sanitizer is pretty flammable from what I understand.

My other thought would be a WD-40 pen-tube or a "Tide Pen" for getting stains out.

Another great idea - when my wife was doing more photography, she carried a Tide pen in her camera bag. Pretty sure it saved several photo shoots over time.
