Alright gang, now that the Recon 9 EVADE backpack is in the books, I'm pulling another out of the temporary archives so that we can give it some umph.

The pack in question is the Recon 3, a basic and lower profile pack that I had originally launched at last year's Tokyo Men's Show. Given what I've heard (feedback) on the last Recon 9 thread, it appears that some of you find the EVADE a tad large and you need something less voluminous for your daily grind. So enter the Recon 3 backpack......

As it stands, the first few requests was for the front top opening zippered pocket to fit Letter/A4 size magazines, docs and newspapers, and for pen lots and a bottle holder. As mentioned in the video, the final prototype actually had plastic Cobra buckles in front. I will try to get a photo of it as soon as I can.

Here's a quick vid of the pack from the other thread:

HELM, would you consider using the Cobra buckle again instead of the typical plastic buckle?

Absolutely but I would recommend the ITW Cobra buckle instead to keep the price realistic.

I use a cobra buckle (steel) as a work belt and end up wearing it for everything.
I'm sure the plastic version will be plenty for a pack. Will these be "field serviceable"?

I've incorporated these on vest for maritime ship-boarders and so far none have had to be replaced. I'm pretty sure 95% of these ITW versions will last forever or they would have not put it out!

Maybe you could add attachment points in the main compartment for 2 Matroskya pouches. One on each side of the compartment.

Have you thought about adding some kind of admin/small pocket in the "front top opening zippered pocket to fit Letter/A4 size" pocket? Like possibly putting in a shorter/smaller "valuables" pocket like you have in the main compartment to keep pens, pencils, etc. easily accessible to use with your papers in that pocket?

This is what I was going to say. I feel like it needs a small/minimal admin compartment somewhere. Even if its just a pen sleeve or 2. I also love the EDC pocket on the Evade, and would love to see that incorporated into this pack. I know its supposed to be a smaller, lighter, more minimalist pack. But for me anyway, I will always have a couple of pens in any pack/bag I carry and I hate for them to be floating around. I like them in a pen slot.

And you can count me in to buy one of these whenever they are available.

Looks good so far. How about making the shoulder straps stowable?

I like the looks of this pack... Very simple and sleek. Black would be nice, I wouldn't mind seeing a version in waxed canvas
Or coyote nylon with dark brown straps and accents with a coyote brown ITW cobra buckle.

HELM, for the front zippered pocket (that you asked about if it was too deep): why not just leave it as it is and put one of the nylon D-rings at the top so people could attach a Matroyska pouch if they wanted to reduce the depth of the pocket? That way if they need the depth, they've got it; but if they want to add the Matroskya pouch they can.

The stowable straps that Myrddraal suggested would be similar to the Flying Circle Gear deluxe helmet bag that you and I had PMed about. Might be a nice feature.

I don't care what others have to say about this but this crowdsourcing thing is the way to go! I wouldn't have been able to come up with these on my own. Thanks guys!

I've finally got some of the revisions done in the Recon 3 and we incorporated slight changes to the structure of the pack. I'm on vacation with the family right now but as soon as I get I'm going to put this through its paces and see how well it works.
