Ok, hopefully this is an easy one for you all to answer.

I need a new pen... Prerequisites are as follows

    1. Must accept fisher space pen refill.(I know people have their opinions but I actually write in the rain a lot and inverted more then I would prefer.)

    2. Must be machined out of something that can be thrown out of a helicopter and still function

    3. As close to a standard pen size as possible. (Currently using a S&W and it is a little bulky. Length is about right). I wear gloves and have large hands. Write in rain clicky pens are about the right size. They fit in flight suits work well with gloves. Design fails though.

    4. Simple design. A cap that "snaps" on or is otherwise securely held in place.

    5. A "sanitized" design, one that doesn't scream "look I'm a weapon" I don't like advertising. Besides with TSA the way they are now I have given away too much stuff.

    6. Bottom line:
I need an extreme use PEN.
    Period.
I'm not looking to single handedly assault a shopping mall filled with zombies armed only with a pen. (Anything UZI = ridiculous.. dna extraction really... If I need to collect dna after an action a sponge is more effective)

That said all those uses for a pen LEOs talk about. Well there ya have it.

    Runners up:

Tough writter - not a fan of the multiple step downs not a lot of fans found on EDC forum to backup. The point is a little obvious.

United Cutlery defense pen - fears of mall brand items, unless I am mistaken. Again no EDC forum backup.

Surefire series - the clicky looks cheaply made and a source of failure. Almost perfect design as far as not identifying itself as a weapon. Appears to be bulky.. your opinions appreciated.

Hinderer pen - looks smaller then standard size, I have large hands and wear gloves regularly so they are clumsy. If this isn't the case please let me know.

Ok. There are some specifics I would love to pool your knowledge base and find the perfect pen.

    KP

I don't know if it'll work after being tossed out of a helicopter... but the Parker Jotter in SS (clicky, not capped) has worked well for me. I work with LEO and most people either carry that or Zebra pens of sorts. IIRC, the Jotter does take the Fisher refills.

While I don't have one (not a big fan of the Fisher space pen refill although I did do the Zebra F-701 mod), the CountyComm Embassy pen appears to fit criteria 1-6. Haven't handled one (CC shipping, especially to Hawaii is a whole other tread...) so can't comment on size, but most seem to like it. From what I understand, it was named Embassy because it does not scream "I'm a weapon".

As for the Hinderer pen, there are two sizes. You might have been looking at the smaller Investigator. The larger is called the Extreme Duty.

The Render K is a beast but may be a little too big for your tastes. $45 for Al and $65 for brass.

If you're talking about the maxmadco pen, I have one and it is an excellent pen. I don't think the Fisher space pen refill will fit, though.

The fisher refill fits perfectly in the Maxmadco (with the white end adapter). I was surprised how well it performed in this pen ...due to the angle of the tip and pen.

Oh wow...looks like we recommended it to too many people. I know my colleague at work was looking at
mine and may have ordered one. Looks like Jim will need to make more. :)

That said, the criteria 2 here; "Must be machined out of something that can be thrown out of a helicopter and still function" makes me think an extreme outdoor use pen such as the Country Comm Embassy may be in order here?

I looked at the embassy pen.. the cap concerns me as I think it will be a pain to have to hold onto all the time. Size is a bot large too.
