Any suggestions? Preferably at cabelas as I have their CC and a bunch of cabelas bucks racked up but I can use that for lots of stuff so it is what it is.

Plan to keep this in my edc/GHB so something beefyish that can take some abuse

You can find several Esee models that fit those criteria, like the 3, the 4, and the laser strike. Ontario also makes some fixed blades in the range, and the Kabar Becker line is under that budget, too. I use Esees, myself.

The 3 and 4 are too long. The 7-1/2" is including the handle. I want it to fit inside my "don't take on a plane pouch"

Gotcha. In that case , the Esee Izula, the Esee Candiru, the Becker 14, the Bradford Guardian 3 fits but is a bit overbudget, the CRKT Minimalist line (but way underbudget).

There are a lot of people who make Izula-style neck knives , so lots of options there. Bark River Knives makes a lot in that size too but I don't remember their prices. Might also be over. Really nice knives though. You could also go to blade HQ and filter by fixed blade and size.

I like the izula and they have it at cabelas. Hmm

I carried mine (an Izula II, slightly longer than the I and comes with micarta handles) backpacking a lot this last summer/fall. Very useful. 1095 steel is supposed to take more care than stainless, but I haven't done anything more than dry the knife since I live in a pretty dry climate. I'd recommend it. They do make it in 440 stainless, too.

And it's not like there are not any other options. The Izula pattern is a fairly common one.

You won't regret buying an izula, or more so the II. Small enough to be carried every day, yet robust enough for some heavy use. I've beaten my esee 4 to hell and regardless what anyone says about 1095, with their heat treat it is bomb proof.

I just got an ESEE 6 for my birthday, and I can't wait to do just that.

    Other non-Cabela's options:
    Kabar Coppersmith
    Kabar BK24 D'Eskabar

    From Cabela's:
    Benchmade Hidden Canyon
Buck Mini Alpha (Alaskan Guide Series in S30V)
Benchmade Steep Country (just a hair big at 7.65")
Cold Steel Pendleton Mini in 3V (also a hair big). Cold steel doesn't get much love, but their workmanship holds up, and now that they've finally adopted some premium steels, they're worth a look.

I'm honestly not impressed with ESEE for the money. 1095 is a cheap steel. You can get an equivalent knife for less.

I've been itching to pull the trigger on that coppersmith for a while, but if I were in your position, I would go with the Hidden Canyon or force the pouch to zip over the steep country. (Actually I would and just recently did go with the Buck Vanguard in the Alaskan Guide line, but that is bigger than your pouch).

EDIT I actually recently acquired an Alpha Mini Hunter (a 154CM version from another source) as well. If you're curious about the blade, I'll post more about it.

Good one, hard to go wrong with BMK.

Don't know this specific model though, reminds me of the 211 Activator - but this is not it. What is it exactly?

Also hard to go wrong with S30V! A wise choice, I think.

If you're going to Cabelas be sure to check the Bargain Bin.. I've picked up crazy deals/steals in there. Almost count on someone incorrectly labeling a return and getting a killer deal on it, as I've done it twice!

+10, I always go the Bargain Cave when I hit a Cabela's.. I always buy too many "bargains!", but it's worth it to look for sure.
