I like to modify knives and I usually feel that I'd need one piece for trying and one to make it "right", especially when it comes to de-assist knives like the Cryo or Leek (even though I only liked the Leek enough to do it again).
I have a few duplicate knives. In some cases, I was concerned about availability problems and did multiple orders. Also, if a knife I like is discontinued, I sometimes order another one. I also have some duplicate knives, where one is set up for right hand and the other for left hand.
I don't have any duplicate sharp right now. I'm eyeing some variations to my ZT 301 and ZT 561because I like mines a lot. I figured more of a good thing would double the pleasures. (Humming old Wrigley gum ginggle)
Two SAK Classic SD's. Saw one at a bargain price and thought it would be a good idea to have a spare.
I started out with a "no duplicates" rule. But I couldn't resist a 2nd Dragonfly 2 when I had the chance to get it in HAP40.
Looking at the posts and examples so far, I do not see multiples shown of the 'same' knife. @Appalachian is showing variants of the Kershaw Leek; @dplafoll speaks of a second Dragonfly 2 -- but with a different blade steel. In my book these are not copies. It is very common for a collector (regardless of what is being collected) to seek out the variants that exist of the item. I've seen fountain pen collectors for example amass a collection of hundreds of (say) the Parker 51 fountain pen, no two of which are the same due to variants in barrel color, cap materials, nib sizes, even location of manufacture. Perfectly normal behavior for a a collector. Makes no difference if all the elements in the collection are in a rotation of use or if some are purely for collection. They are not duplicates. L'chaim! I agree with @Moshe ben David on this. I collect a few EDC items and have several of them. For non-collection items, I tend to have only one. The problem is, of course, that I like to "try out" too many different toys!
I don't have any duplicates currently though I do have a few similar knives. I don't see any real point in having multiples of different colors except when collecting things like Alox. I see no point at all in having multiples of the same exact knife. I do see value in having the same model of knife with different materials for the blade and/or the handles. I don't see any value in carrying two of the same model or even of the same basic type of knife. For me the whole point of carrying more than one knife would be to have knives that can handle cover each other's weak points.
I like different versions of Strider knives; SnG's & PT's. There are so many different variations, plus the DDC & MSC ones........
Benchmade 730/733/735 Ares Exact model number depends on the era it was made. I am actually not fully conversant in the Ares history, but in a nutshel it started life as the 730 during the 2000 model year, then updated to the 732 and 733, and finally on to the 735 up until it was discontinued 2010 (2011???) It was then revived as the 730 for 3 limited edition runs in 2012, and again in 2013 for another 3 LE runs, and one last LE run in 2015. Don't get me started on the list of different sub-models withintin the Ares line. There have been several dozen different varieties that I could name, and I do not come close to knowing them all.
I have multiples of PM2’s on different scale and blade materials, multiple SAK’s really like the Farmer and have them on EDC bags and on all of the cars.
