I've been thinking about getting ahold of a money clip to use along with my minimalist front pocket wallet. This is something I've never had before so I'm really not sure if it's worth doing. I don't tend to carry a lot of cash, but when I do it winds up getting crumpled which causes me to handle it longer. Handling cash longer means more exposure, and exposure is not my friend. The hope here would be to keep a bill fold that's easy to take out, use, and put away. I'm looking for pros, cons, and item recommendations if they're liked enough. If I do make this purchase, I would like to avoid multi-tasking devices (e.g. wallet with money clip), sharp corners, and anything that may ruin the magnetic stripe on my credit cards (same pocket).
They are very easy to lose, in my humble opinion. I'm very 'on the go', but aware of what I'm carrying. My money clip simply disappeared. I carried it for about a week. Then lost it.... With money and cards. When it comes to my cash, cards, personal info, it is just better to have a wallet that you can feel the weight and size. I'd rather be slightly uncomfortable with a wallet always hanging on me, than lose a money clip that I can't even feel when it jumped ship.
I recently went to a fairly minimal front pocket wallet with a money clip built in. It's by Levi's and came from Kohl's. It was around $23. The money clip is magnetic and doesn't seem to mess with my debit cards etc. I have to say I like it. I used to use a big leather bi-fold and eventually decided to just get rid of it.
I find it more compact and easier to store/carry, easier to access what I want. I originally changed to a clip because I couldn't sit on a wallet any more with my hip arthritis, even a dead thin one.So I went to front pocket carry, and then to a more compact clip over a wallet. I have the opposite feeling as MVL above, losing a wallet is easier IMO because its just cloth/leather and has no weight/bulk that can be felt... at least for me I could never feel the weight. I've been carrying a money clip for 7 years, fold cash around my DL and a couple other cards, and it goes in a from pocket, or a upper shirt or jacket breast pocket. A good metal clip has some weight to it that I can feel.(esp my current one that has a 1oz solid silver coin on it, its made by Alaska Mint). My first was by Vic, their SAK money clip, it worked great too, just enough weight to be felt, especially with a few cards in it. YMMV though; I'm betting this is one of those things that is Very personal on feelings and taste/prefference.
I've been carrying a money clip for about 15 years. Loss has never been an issue. Either it will work for you or... <* gasp *> it won't. People can share anecdotes with you until the cows come home, but much like motorcycle helmets, you won't know until you know. I just checked and I still have an older money clip that used to have a decorative plate on it that fell off. Not as pretty as it used to be but still functional. If you want to convo me a shipping address, I can drop it in a padded envelope and you can give it a try before you drop money on a nicer one. Then you can just pass it along to someone else that might want to test drive a money clip. ATB, Sam
I don't mind spending money, but I want to get the right thing. I think what I'm after is a clamp-like money clip that has some kind of bar that goes in the middle of the fold so it's easy to get to the middle.
Meh. I'm overthinking this. I'm going to buy a neat looking handmade one from Etsy. Worst case, I've supported a craftsman.
