I'm an electrician and I'm looking for a messenger bag or something similar to carry a change of clothes in, (shirt, pants, socks, undergarments, and the such), a book or two and maybe a few different items (nothing to big). I would like it to offer some weather protection, and be able to securely close it so I don't lose the contents. I know for the price that's going to be hard to do, back I just got back to work after a lengthy lay-off and this is all I can afford right now.

Do you have a Wal-Mart or Target near you? That might have something suitable in your price range, but I am looking online also...

Not exactly a messenger bag, but Home Depot carries a white canvas "tool" bag (their house brand), similar to the more expensive Klein.
Has a shoulder strap and sells for just over $40, has a magnetic clasp and outside pockets. A lot more character than a cheap nylon bag.
Would definitely fit in with the commercial trades.

If you have an army surplus store near you, try looking for some of the medic/paratrooper messenger bags. I bought one for around 20 dollars and it works great. Just a cotton canvas bag with a few dividers in it, a small button closed pouch, and a big flap to cover it all with a clasp. I use mine for just what you said: clothes, books, and small everyday items. I used mine for school for a while and its now just a supplimental bag for clothes on the weekend.

Both of the CountyComm BOB's - regular and extra large - fall in this price range, though shipping carries the XL bag over $40.

Second the "Jack Bauer" option although note that there is a small zippered compartment inside the main pouch but there is no closure to the main pouch as such, the flap secures by velcro. The bag is deep enough that I've never had a problem of loose stuff falling out. Alternatively you might want to check out some of the LA Police Gear options.

Got the jack bauer bag, it is stylish but crap : not secure at all. I use it only when I need a lot of room i relatively secure environments.

For messenger bags in you budget you may look at north face messengers bags some fits in you budget. Look also at Eastpak, Tatonka...

I've got an Aerostich courier bag I'd ship to you for $50. You couldn't beat the quality at twice the price. I carried it for a week. Pm me if you are interested.

Hope it works great for you. I kinda wish it had been all canvas with no leatherette but individual tastes vary. Looking forward to hearing about quality.
