I'm looking for a hat for hot, sunny days. I'd like a mesh crown for ventilation, and a wide brim for all-around protection. Machine washability is a plus, though hand washing would be ok too. Light colors would help prevent heat buildup from the sun. I'm expecting to pay somewhere under $50, but I'd pay more for superior design and construction. Does anyone have any experience with these or other models?

EDIT: Some options from Tilley. They seem pricy, but well designed.

Do you folks have experience with the mesh versions? There's a type with about an inch of mesh around the top, which doesn't seem like it would provide a lot of ventilation. Then there are the models I linked to with mesh on most of the crown. Since protection from wind and rain isn't an issue, I'm considering getting the latter, unless the inch or so of mesh on the top is actually sufficient for really hot weather.

Seems to work for me here in southern Nevada. Mesh all over the top will get your head sunburned. I wear a head rag under my hat to soak up some of the sweat and protect the hat from getting all nasty. Do dip the hat into water when I get home to remove the sweat salts from the hat and let air dry. Soak the head rag to clean it up too. with a slight breeze you should be good to go.

Good advice from vegassprky. We live in similar climates and I agree ... full-mesh top = "fry baby."

I was unclear ... the mesh is just on the sides of the crown. There's still a fabric top piece. Additionally, the 3d mesh of the Tilleys and some other models are intended to ventilate without letting the sun in: the mesh is actually rated SPF 50. Anyway, thanks for the good advice: I agree that controlling the sun is important since I have dark hair that heats up a lot under the sun. =)

I see people walking and riding with baseball caps, which I started out in but realized my ears needed protection so because of what I've read here I went with the Tilly which is expensive but well worth it IMO. Best of wishes with what you chose, let us know what you get and later on whay you think of it.

Yeah, I never really considered a baseball cap because I want the full brim that goes around. Thanks again!

Got a Tilley TM10. It was north of 100°F in Albuquerque over the weekend with a blistering sun, so I chose to get it then and there instead of waiting for mail/net order. It's working out well so far. Thanks for the ideas, everyone!

A lot of good canvas hats have been listed. I personally like the BC Hats Cool as a Breeze Leather. You have to scroll down the page about half way. Even in leather, it's still crushable for packing.

Today I tried on a Tilley, 7 1/8 size good fit. Then I got a haircut and my baseball cap was loose. So what size should I go with? Not sure 4-6 weeks worth of hair is worth a new size.

Can stretch the Tilly with your knee a little bit.
