I am a paramedic also in a fire based system. I am a cross trained firefighter/medic, however as a lieutenant, the only opportunity to utilize my ALS skills is either to work overtime on a medic unit, or get lucky enough to get assigned to one of the five ALS equipped engine companies. I am hoping for a transfer because I don't work a lot of OT, and I don't want to get too rusty with my skills.

I work for a private here in S. Florida... I never pictured myself doing this for this amount of money. I was previously a concrete labored in Ohio and thought that I was providing an opportunity for me to better provide for my family and spend more Quality time with them.

To tell you the truth, I can't say what route I will take. I love helping people and taking care of them. Unfortunately, the company I work for is soley for the profit. Their customer is the facility, not the patient. I only have 2 and some years under my belt in the emergency setting, but I know that I would like to stay. I had thought about doing the fire thing, but it is so heavily saturated.

I would be so grateful to get my foot into the door in an emergency department or hospital so that I can finally focus on which route to pursue instead of fighting to make ends meet.

In the end, I need to be somewhere where the patients best interest are in mind, not people showing up just to "schlub" patients off into a bed so that they can get on to the next call... Any job offers? LOL.

Not a professional yet, but I'm working on it. Just finished my 3rd year of med school and have just started my Match application. Surgery for me.

I have been an EMT-B since 2008 and I just got my acceptance letter for Paramedic school. In the mean time, in between time I have been working toward my Associates in Applied Sciences in Emergency Medicine...I just have Paramedic School, A&P, and a Patient Assessment course left to go and I will be rockin' and a rollin'. After that I have looked at an online Bachelors in EMS Administration...we shall see how that goes.

Nice. My wife has a BAS in Public Safety Management and works in the county EM office as a planner. I worked for FEMA during the 2004/2005 hurricane seasons, but resigned in 2006. It was a fun ride but enough to wear me out. My wife worked fore the Florida State Emergency Response Team (SERT) during that time too. She stuck with EM and I went to nursing, but still volunteer with the Red Cross.

The 2004/2005 seasons wore everyone in Florida out. I thought one of our weather guys was going to have a stroke on the air.

I'm starting my RN program at the end of August. Seems like most of you had fun, even if it was wearing. When I finish, I'm planning to work for a year or two around here, then maybe see if I can join the armed forces (not sure which branch). Just an idea.

EMTB since 1979, EMTD since 1995.

Since I retired last year, I'm going to let my cert expire as I have no practical way to keep current with CE.

I was an engineer on a medic engine for many years, I learned to strongly dislike medical aid calls although the experence gained was priceless and made me a better EMT.

I thought I was the only one who thought like that. I work in a SNF/LTC facility. I bet 70% of my time is spent charting.

If a patient hurts themself, as a nurse one should be taking care of that injury. Instead, you have just a few minutes to take care of it and then spend about an hour or more calling everybody under the sun, charting it in 4 different places, filling out a report and other forms. Overtime is a no no so time is your enemy. What ever happened to hands on care?

Its all about the paperwork, actual patient care be damned.

I'm licensed in Tennessee as a Medical Laboratory Professional. Currently, I'm a Sr. Medical Technologist handling QA and inventory management for a regional blood bank that serves 22 hospitals. After 27 years in the field, I'm perfectly happy with this 8:30am - 5pm job (with the occasional phone call at night or on the weekends) -- I like having the free time to spend with the grandkids and my hobbies.

Current: NREMT-I/85, NM EMT-I, CO EMT-B IV, TX EMT-I, Paramedic Student

Goals: To get my NREMT-P, TX, CO, and NM EMT-P, FP-C, CCEMTP, and RN. I either want to work as a flight medic/nurse or continue on and get my ACNP.

No desire to do FF, and I refuse to volunteer, so looking at either Denver, TX, or a few places back east that are third service EMS. I currently work for a private, for-profit rural 911 service
