I've used mechanical pencils for many years.
my first one was a Conté 0,7 (from bic) that came free with a magazine (I was 9 year old)
that pencil was soon replaced (year 1989) with a staedtler mars 0,5 that looks almost similar to the one produced today
    [IMG]
I had two of these: the first was red, the second one that survived through all my studies was all black coloured...
now they make that only in blue with some red accents  ...IMHO the older production was better refined and I really liked that pencil but some year ago it broke....and the new one hasn't the "appeal" of the older series
    Now I'm using that one:
it come in five colors (black, red, blue. yellow, green) and is just a cheap and honest writer...

    now the question:
I want a "metal body" mechanical pencil 0,5mm with a "tool" look...
I've eyed the OHTO Super Promecha 1505 and the Rotring 600 (old knurled style) someone has used one of those two pencils?
    Do you have other recommedations?

    Cheers from Italy

I'm not sure anyone mentions those particular pencils, but this thread might have some useful info.

    I have recently bought via Ebay a silver rotring 600 0.7 mm from a german seller. Since when I was a young I wanted one : ). It also exist in 0.3 - 0,5 - 0.9 mm.
If you want a "tool look" this is definitely the pencil to get. The weight IMHO is perfect, well balanced. The finishes are superb.

Thanks for your answer, can you confirm that the Rotring has a fixed sleeve?

    :)

If you, for "fixed sleeve" mean the small metal tube that supports the lead, yes, its fixed

I'm rocking something like that, a KOH-I-NOOR Rapidomatic. Pretty old though.

Those are a pair of nice
    Rotring 600 mechanical pencils,
old style with the knurled grip,
and discontinued for some years now
new sample may be found on the bay or other internet sources just search for "rotring 600 old"...

p.s. I ordered the other day an Ohto super promecha 0,5mm should arrive here in few days
choose this one because is cheaper and far more "geekier" but the acquisition of the rotring is only delayed :)

for me its the pentel P205. I kept a single one thru 4 years of shcool, but now lose about two a week. Nothing else feels right in my hand, and I can field-strip and clean it with my eyes closed.

Some great info in these threads. I'm just getting into nice writing instruments and since I'm always drawing lately I'd like to step up the quality of my mechanical pencils. Will be going on a shopping spree this week at the art supply store in Noho. I'm sure they have the Pentels and Staedler stuff there.

The Guild has the Staedtler 2mm lead holders usually, but for standard width, they have some Pentel, but I would recommend the Alvin Draftmatic or Draftec Retractable. Pretty reasonably priced for an art store. I use them all the time, but I miss being closer to the larger supply stores in Boston. :)

Are the rotring 600's aluminum? They look amazing, even for the steep price tag, but I still need a little convincing before I can make the plunge to put 50$ down on a pencil. What do you guys think about them. :ty:

The Rotring 600 that I have is brass - I think. Regardless, it's heavy. The 600 series may be made out of different materials, though. They have been discontinued, btw.

I wouldn't trade mine. I seem to write better with a heavier pen.

Still haven't made it to the Guild Art Supply in Noho but I did pick up some Pentels .05s at Staples. Not bad at all and certainly a step up from the Bics. I will check out some others though...thanks for the recommendation Samson. :)

    Of course, sir. :)

I contemplating taking the plunge on a black old-style 600. Of course, if I do that, I'll HAVE to have the matching black pen, which will take some finagling at $120 on evil bay... :(
