Wore the heck out of my $80 North face vest. 2 years later, the zipper failed. Walk in to REI for store credit. Put it towards a vest at half the price. tossed in some leg warmers for cycling, paid $4

I've been a member since grad school, 30+ years ago. They repaired the book bag that I bought from them after I overloaded it. They have replaced items for several family members over the years. Great organization, well worth joining.

REI tends to be overpriced on many items but their customer service is excellent.

To me, REI is to rec. equipment, as Les Schwab her ein the PNW is to Tires. Priced higher than some competition? yes. Do you get what you pay for in terms of service and support? yes.

Prices may be higher on some things, but there is a dividend for members, currently around 7%. That needs to be taken into account, as does the superior service.

Thats true. My membership (a few decades ago) was the best $2 I ever spent in an outdoor store.

Yup, not always the lowest prices, but some of the best customer service out there.

Just remember, it's a CO-OP, so you get a rebate check yearly. Also given the sales coupons, and annual sales you can find bargains.

Last September, I finally broke down and decided to a Klean Kanteen. I took my 20% off regula price coupon in hand and went to the store.

I hadn't checked, but they were having their annual sale on Klean Kanteen. So I got the 40 oz one, and used the coupon for a new battery charger.

When the clerk asks, they usually think I forgot a digit :)

I really only shop there once or twice a year. The closest one is out of my way by 40 minutes so it's not an easy store to get to and I prefer to shop local vs. online. But, might be worth it.

Get your membership now and it could pay for itself by May. They send 20% off coupons to members for their annual super sale (and usually a couple more times during the year.)

I don't shop there a lot, but there is usually something I would like to get as the summer is getting ready to start.

I have the REI Visa as well, so I get an even larger dividend. It is nice to get $200+ back every year.

What ****** me off is people who abuse the return policy. I have seen people come in w/ trash bags full of old dirty clothes and boots and proceed to get credit back.

I joined in the 1990s and love going to REI, although the nearest store is in Austin, and I'm in San Antonio. Near downtown Austin, there's an REI next to a locally-owned bookstore (BookPeople: pricey, but good). Down Lamar Blvd. is the Shoal Street Saloon, where I generally stop for a burger on the patio in back, overlooking Shoal Creek. It's a great way to spend a couple of hours.

    All my best,
    Dirty Bob

Still have a REI tent from about '92 going strong. Great store.
