Although I literally just received it, it seems like it would be hard to beat a Seiko Black Monster for the price! It can be found for about the price you are looking to spend.

This one comes on metal but looks nice on a nato too. Quartz accuracy, solar charging, and 300m water resistance.

EDIT: No, never mind. Rubber only.

If you are doing rough work on a daily basis, a quartz watch would be a better choice,
with g-shock on the extreme end of durability, I think the ga-200 is a new analog only model that costs well below $200.

The skx line of divers watches (monster,007 etc) have minions of dedicated fans and have an excellent reputation as far as mechanicals go, I dont personally own one but I do have a bulova powered by a myota auto movement that keeps very good time but I dont wear it to work.

The Citizens that I have owned were analog/digital and were both very durable, I wore my navistar every day for 11 years moving furniture and playing paintball and only recently .

I'm allergic too. Can't stand the nickel in the parts like the knob. SS is okay on me though. I had been going without until I got a Casio Pathfinder. The bands design keeps all except the watch back off of my skin. Thought if I sweat a lot it will start to itch:(
I'd love a better looking watch:)Fortunately I need one that looks good only on few occasions.

Generally, a Ti watch is guaranteeing the case and the bracelet is Ti (sometimes not the bracelet). No guarantee that the crown is Ti, or the clasp on the bracelet, or the bezel, or even the case back. Just something to be aware of and investigate thoroughly before making a purchase.

Some tricks/ideas that might help the two of you with a steel watch:

I know some people have had luck with a coat of clear nail polish (among other substances) on the back of steel watches. That is a much harder trick with the crown (the knob), but doable. Something else you might try is wearing right. I'm right handed, wear on my right wrist, and one thing that does is put the crown pointing up my arm, where it won't contact/dig into the back of my hand. If that works, but is uncomfortable you could get a left handed model and wear left. Finally, any even barely competent watch maker should be able to put a new/different crown onto a watch the trick is finding one (both crown and watch maker these days).

Hopefully there is something there of use. I'm a watch person, and I know that it is one thing to find a watch you like and quite another to have a watch out there that you want. If you can just get past the allergic reaction you might land in that latter set.

    Best of luck.

If you look in the right spots a luminox in stainless can be had for about that. Solid watches and the tritium is a plus

While I know they're not popular, I've had nothing but good things to say about my Timex watches. I picked up one of the Intelligent Quartz Tide, Temp Compass watches and love it.

Check out Overstock.com they have great deals on watches. They're always sending out coupons via email too. If it's your first time buying you get 10% off.

While the Monster is a great watch, I don't think it meets the OP requirements of "not too flashy or big"
