I'm in high school and finally, after passing the driving test and saving up money am buying a truck (2006 Toyota Tacoma) I've already got a FAK and som other gear that is going in it and I'm looking for a light to mount on it, probably somewhere like in the map pocket on the driver's side door. Things that this light needs: Bright, good thrower and either 2xaa or 18650 powered. i would like to keep it at around 25-35 dollars. Things that aren't necessary for this light: no clip necessary, size doesn't matter, and neutral vs cool white won't really matter. I'm looking at the thorfire c8s, but there a lot of reviews that say it's crapped out on them after a few months. Thanks in advance -TOPOS
Add a bit more and get the Olight M23 Javelot. 18650 battery with amazing 340m throw! I got mine for $55 on AliExpress, but can't find it there anymore, and on other sites it's more than $90! SAM_0647 by ihatebottleopeners, on Flickr
I don't have any experience with the ThorFire, but it looks like it's based on the Convoy C8. I have the Convoy and it's a solid light for the price that generally gets good reviews. Still in your price range and available with a few different emitters.
I just picked up a Convoy C8, XM-L2 U2 1A (de-domed, for extra throw, with a super-concentrated hot spot), and with the guppydrv firmware upgrade (for extra programming flexibility). Very cool light for the money, and well within your budget. I've also got an S2+ and S3 (both with XM-L2 T6 4C emitters), and will be doing a brief review with plenty of pictures, for all of them, once those two arrive.
They definitely have a wide selection of lights. I've never had a failure with any of mine The PD40 (4th from the left) is one of my five main EDCs (pack-carried). It produces a very usable floody MT-G2 (semi-neutral-tinted) beam. I sometimes use it for ceiling-bounced still photography.
You get what you pay for. Go to Going Gear and search Olight S1. You can get that a sheath and two traffic wands (white and orange) for about $65. I have 3 cars and these in each. This is a great light. You won't regret paying the extra money.
RGRAY I got mine for $33 without any add-ons. If you add a battery, a spare one, cheap charger, wand and sheath will go not more than $50.
A few of the Fenix E series lights are under $40, I believe, and are 2x AA powered. The E21 and E25 both share the same body design but the E21 has a tail switch and the E25 has a side switch. I have an E25 loaded with Energizer lithiums that sits in my glove box. Great light, wide beam and good throw. It's been dropped, rained on more times than I can remember in the last few years. Very durable.
DSCF0120 by ?, on Flickr Comes with charging cable (lighter socket), runs on 18650-included, also runs on 3-aaa. Called a SWAT lite-cheap-think I paid a $20 on amazon.
The often overlooked Mini Maglite Pro and Pro+ can be found for $25-30, and offer lots of light (200+ lumens) on two AA batteries. It has an adjustable focus, and pretty good throw in the throwy end.
in the spirit of being enabled, I've decided to get both the Olight S1 and the Thorfire, thanks for all the advice buds. EDIT: in the end I backed out of the olight and impulse bought a thru nite t10, I will definitely be buying the olight next time I come across some more money.
Thrunite Archer 2C v2 cant give you a price right now but 800 lumens, 18650, ~around 50$ if I recall correctly Gesendet von meinem GT-I9195 mit Tapatalk
So far i'm loving both of the lights, anyone got a recommendation on a way to mount it in the car? also does anyone have any experience mounting a first aid kit on one of the mirrors, like if it made it unfold or got in the way
Like you said earlier, I keep my flashlight + FAK in the driver side pocket doors. I don't want to advertise any items I might have in my truck.
A good back up option in a separate compartment: Coast HP1. A cheapie beater ($8 shipped) that you won't mind chucking in a glovebox and forgetting about until your main goes down or gets left at home. Single AA.
