do any/many of you keep your mags loaded between shooting sessions?
any ill effects that this could have on them?

There is not a problem with current magazines. Spring steel does not cause an issue with staying compressed.

I keep the one in my concealed carry gun loaded at all time. I rotate the magazine every couple weeks though.

I have two mags for my M&P9C, and they stay loaded all the time. I haven't had a mag-related failure yet. On the downside, I did kill one of my BX-25 magazines by leaving it loaded for a few weeks.

I currently don't carry any extra mags so I just keep that one loaded and rotate them whenever I think about it. That said I have heard lots of people say they leave mags loaded for years without problems.

I've learned from others that generally it's a lot more harmful to a mag to constantly load and unload it than to leave it loaded. It makes sense that springs fail due to fatigue (as most things do).

Not entirely analogous, but the assisted opening in knives wears out from continually opening and closing it, not from leaving it closed.

When I took my class at TDI they said leaving them loaded wouldn't be an issue and recommended it to break in the magazines for easier loading.

Keep them loaded for all handguns. Have a few AR mags I keep loaded as well because I need somewhere to store the ammo.:)

Good question by the way .. I've been wondering this myself as far as what everyone else does and recomends.

reading on many other forums that most of the new, quality mags will have no issues leaving them loaded.
Some situations, people have said, left their mags loaded for over one year without being touched, and still shot fine.
Also many stated they'll pack a 30rnd AR mag with 28-29

guess i could always just buy a few springs here and there for later if one did wear out

I keep quite a few loaded and have never had any problems. I rotate maybe once a year but I don't think it's really necessary.

The FBI did a study a few years ago and it show that leaving a magazine loaded didnt cause any failures. What did cause failure was the extension and compression of the spring after loading and unloading the magazine

Keep all my handgun and rifle mags loaded 24/7. Been doing so for 15 years and never had problems with magazine springs.

All mags loaded, they are not very useful empty.

Except steel ak mags, they will work as a :censored: good club.

This. It's the cycles, not the load. Either leave 'em unloaded, or loaded. And as someone else pointed out, replacement springs are pretty cheap.

I recently fired some 556 I loaded, 28 in 30 rd mags, in 2005 before I joined the army. Just found them in my parents storage and they fired fine. No malfunctions at all.
