Li-ion battery safety testing standards

    Safety performance has become an important indicator of Li-ion batteries. If a Li-ion battery has design defect, comprised of low-quality materials, assembled incorrectly, or got damaged, it will pose a risk. Additionally, because of high energy density, Li-ion batteries are susceptible to overheating. Due to these reasons, there are some main safety standards below. Manufacturers need to apply when developing and testing the Li-ion batteries.

    For UN38.3, IEC62281 standards, they are mainly aiming at the simulation test of the external environment and mechanical vibration of Li-ion batteries during transport. It simulates the possible hazards of Li-ion batteries during transportation. Such as height simulation, temperature test, vibration, impact, external short circuit and impact.

    To ensure electrical performance and safety of Li-ion batteries, the UL1642 standard is applicable to non-rechargeable and rechargeable Li-ion batteries. The purpose of this standard is to reduce the risk of ignition or explosion of Li-ion batteries during usage. It requires the tested battery shall be free from fire, explosion, liquid leakage, exhaust and combustion. And the package shall not be broken.

    During design and manufacturing process, there are also safety standards, such as IEEE1625, IEEE1725, etc. Take IEEE1725 as an example, it comprehensively and clearly requires the design, raw materials, manufacturing process, finished product test and evaluation of the cell. So as to provide a reliable evaluation guarantee for the safety.
