I've carried this in one of my pockets every single day since I got it, probably mid to late 70s. You're probably going to have to be at least my age, 48, to guess what it is.

It is a piece of a metal banding strip. Bent in half like that and placed in your mouth it becomes a whistle! Haven't seen one in many years.

I wish I could find a source for stainless steel strap with the exact same size and holes as this one- wouldn't have to worry about it getting all cruddy like this one did inside.

No idea. It's just always been in a pocket since I got it when I was around 10 or 12. I never could get the hang of whistling with a couple of fingers in my mouth (super loud whistling), and a kid at school had one of these whistling louder than anybody. I had to have one. I traded something- no clue what, for this whistle. I mostly used it at ball games to root the team on. It's so dang loud, people in front of me would put their hands over their ears. The cool thing, is you can easily change pitch with it as well instead of it being just a loud monotone sound.

I might have to make one out of stainless, because no whistle made can match it's versatility.

I saw a few with two holes side by side. I guess that would make it louder?

I've got some different types of stainless sheet metal I've junked out of equipment over the years. I'm going to attempt to duplicate the one in my op. I'll post here with the results when I'm done with it. I love the small size of the metal strap type vs. the shepherd's whistle (although it looks small as well).

I just completed my clone of the original one I carried for around 35 years and it works even better than the original. It's made of stainless steel about twice as thick as the original one. Now I can put away the jingley 4Sevens whistle that's been hanging on my keychain for the last few weeks.

New one is on top and Boker prybar is there to give an idea of size. I couldn't be happier with the outcome of my new whistle that may just last me the rest of my life since it's stainless.
