As long as they are legal in my state I will carry them along with throwing stars and my caltrops... :ninja:

Had to leave a little ninja humor for SAK to find. It takes him awhile.

Yeah, the LED reliability is in the emitter itself-the drivers and other circuitry running can be(and often are) crap.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I'm trying out some led bulbs I bought at Lowes. Store brand Utilitec they claim to use 78 cents per year usage. I did notice a difference when I replaced a bunch of CFLs I had in the basement though, the CFLs were a yellowish tint while the LED are whiter. I went with warm white on the led bulbs also they are equivalent to a 40watt vs the CFLs I had in that were 60 watt equivalent. The LED bulbs even though they are only 40 watts are way brighter then the 60 watt CFLS I replaced.

I've upgraded most of the bulbs in my (smallish) apartment and I've been happy with the results in general; including tint.

I started with CFLs and have been migrating to LEDs - overall, I'm much happier with the LED tints.

I've slowly been doing the same thing migrating to LED bulbs but Lowes had them on sale so I bought a bunch.

Mostly agree here. The mainland China produced CFLs have failed sooner than expected. The longest any have lasted in my home is 2.5 to 3 yrs. I have an American made CGL in my garage that's been lighting the way for more than 12 years.

As CFLs fail, I am replacing them with Cree brand LED bulbs. The Cree in a a variety of color temps and the first ones I installed are still working at 3 yrs and counting.

Your 40 W equivalent appears brighter because most CFLs are usually warm white at 2700K, your warm white LED is 3000K, though have seen them as bright white (not daylight). Also, from personal experience, KEEP THE BILL ! in the box. Read the warranty, because they will burn out. I've returned two LEDs to the mfr and received a replacement. One was a Sylvania and the other a two week old Cree from Home Depot.

I've been buying mine at Ace Hardware when they go on sale and at Wal-Mart othewise. I've also noticed that the tint of the LEDs gives them a lot of brightness gain. I've been replacing 72 watt incans with 60 watt equivalent LEDs, and the LEDs always seem brighter. I've had no faulty lights yet buying the cheap, Wal-mart brand at around $8 per light for 60 watt equivalent, and I can't find anything comparable, let alone cheaper, online.

I paid $3.98 for a 40 watt equivalent LED bulb non dimmable.

I don't recall finding them quite that cheap at Home Depot, but ballpark $4 ~ $5 on sale.

My local Lowes had a display as you enter the store across from the light bulbs, said they are regular price $4.98 on sale $3.98 so I grabbed 7 of them. That was what I needed to replace my most used CFL bulbs.

    Sweeeeet.

I wasn't disputing your find - just noting that Home Depot doesn't seem to run sales that nice, or at least not when I happen to be in the store. :D

I didn't take it that you were disputing anything, I was just giving out a bit more info. I have HD 5 minutes down the road from me and I'm in there a lot but never find sales that great there I have to travel another 5 minutes to Lowes. It's nice to have both stores close enough that if one doesn't have it I go to the other without much travel time or trouble.

You guys might be interested in a Home Depot deal thread over at BLF that details a lot of penny deals. Yes, penny deals, the receipts are posted. Apparently there is a way do do it if your timing is right (you follow the price decline and get it on the day they should be pilling items of the shelf; it's all scientific) and use the self checkout.

Be careful...the CFL lightbulbs are recording your keystrokes and listening to everything you say. [IMG]

The other drawback to CFLs is the UV exposure - tiny cracks in the tube result in potentially high degrees of UV exposure.
