I am looking into a laptop, but I know nothing about them. I was wondering if somebody could help me find a decent laptop for at most 500 USD that runs windows 8, has at least 6 gig of memory, and 500 gig of hard drive storage. Decent battery life is also needed. I would also want new only.

    Any help is appreciated,

you probably need to supply a lot more information in order for anyone to provide guidance
    - what size screen? and resolution?
    - is this a desktop replacement or a road warrior? i.e. is weight a factor
    - connectivity -- HDMI, ethernet, wireless (N or AC), USB ports (how many, 2.0/3.0)
    - what tasks? (why 6 gb RAM / 500 gb hard drive)
    - are you willing to do your own upgrades? (buy a machine with 4 gb and add 4 gb for example)
    - desired level of warranty / customer service (do you want to stick with major brands or are you a risk-taker?)
    - need an optical drive?

at the desired price point, you're probably looking at one of many readily available 15" consumer grade laptops from Dell, Lenovo, HP, etc.

Can go on Dell's website and build your own and see what price you come up with. Might be a bit above your price point, but it's a start and will give you an idea of what's out there.

Check your local big box stores, one here has a 15.6" HP, Core i3 processor, 6 GB Ram, 500 GB HDD, and Win 8.1 in your price range.

Try newegg. Lenovo and Asus both have pretty decent offerings in that price range...

I have decided to INCREASE my budget...

750 usd not including tax and wireless mouse

With more budget comes more pickiness though

I need at least 1 tb hard drive, 6 gig ram, a decent graphics card (able to easily handle cad software and mid level games), latest windows, relatively portable since I will be taking it to school occasionally which means sub 15 inch, and decent battery life

    Thanks

Techbargians is a great site to start. Techbargains has listings for Amazon, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Acer and more.

Microsoft stores are having some great deals on laptops at your pricepoint that meet or exceed your requirements.

Great time of year to shop for a new laptop!
