Thanks, Stormdrane. I guess it's the last strand that's giving me trouble. Do the second and third ends come out of the knot from the same loop? Do they all come out of the knot from the same "hole"?
That is with gutted vord right Storm? I like MWK better with the guts in. Getting these guys to tighten up right is the trick Let me see about a pic... MWK in the middle of the toxic green and black one...4 strand 8 strand MWK in the middle of the bottom one there...
Well I'm not getting the MWK, so I gave up last night and did this instead. I think the braid part might be a little too long.
I could've posted that. :lolhammer: I ended up making a round sinnet and finishing off with a GID pull. I'll try to take some pics of my latest (simple) lanyards.
Have you guys used the kangaroo lace available from ubraidit.com to make lanyards? I kinda like leather lanyards for knives and stuff, but it's hard to find good leather to work with.
I did have some inexpensive lacing leather in a drawer. It's okay for something like a keychain, but will break if you pull hard enough on it. Here's a red leather monkey fist fob.
The turks head looks great David O0 I dug up some more lacing leather scraps and made a couple more monkey fists. I had picked up a few different colors of lacing leather off a clearance rack at a hobby store sometime last year. IIRC it came in 2 or 3 yard lengths, but you may find longer rolls if you look around. There are several different types/shapes/grades. It seems to work ok for simpler projects.
Go slow, tightening little by little. If you try to do it all at once, the whole thing tends to get really messy. I don't know how many times I go around a turk's head to tighten it, but it's a lot...
Some more to show Just finished a monkey fist I'll post tomorrow. seems as soon as I get them done they are flyng out the door. Thanks to Stormdrane, Greenled, and all others for the isnspirations and ideas that have spurred me on. Got me a copy of the Ashley book coming too!
I usually use what's handy, 550 paracord or type I paracord. You can buy whipping twine, or use string, utility cord, spectra thread, fishing line, yarns, etc... Normally using the common whipping method, it'll loosen over time, but I like using the paracord because I melt it to the surrounding cord so it won't slip or loosen so easily.
You mean the outer cord? I have been using the nylon inner cords after being removed. I have been finding that there is usually one strand inside that is, guess, color coded. It is white with some colored stripe on it and looks really nice when done. I am trying the melting method with the nylon too. Am thinking of stopping at local craft store to see what they have in the way of adhesives(=fabric glues).
Did a two strand braid with what was left hanging out and my bid at whipping using nylon inner cord. needs more practice. Call me silly if you will, but I was wondering how hard the balls could feel. So I swung it and popped myself on the jawline, not full strength but not soft either. Ouch, it stung. So then i tried back of the forearm, that stung too.
Stormdrane has done some monkey fists with HUGE ball bearings inside. Wouldn't want to get hit with one of those. Funny, my brother inlaw was in the Navy. I happened to show him the monkey fist that I did and he immediately recognized it (as he should, being a sailor and all). He said they used to use a monkey fist with a small line to throw ashore, which was attached to the larger lines. But know, they Navy (or at least his warship) didn't allow them anymore because they make too good of a weapon :lolhammer: Don't know about you, but the more weapons our side has, the better! Dan
