Is there one? Either in terms of pixels or data?

New here and don't want to be obnoxious by posting massive images if that's a no no.

The only limit I am aware of is for your profile pic. As for in thread post, try keep them so you can see the image rather than having to scroll all over the place to see what the picture is of.

I think the rule regarding image size is... in the FAQs on image hosting how-tos.

640x480. If you like, you can use thumbnails which will help speed up loading in the forum.

Originally, like 5 or 6 years ago, the limit was 640x480.I read that in a still applicable rules thread recently, but can't find it now. :(

Edit; Scribhneoir beat me to it while i was looking for where I read that...

I've always used 800x600, its a good size to see things, but doesn't overwhelm small netbooks etc...

With the new forum software, its sorta a mute point, since the software scales all wide images to fit automatically, then you can click it to expand back to normal size.

Those of us on dial up appreciate the use of good sense, and moderate file size... ;)
So ya, rule of thumb is don't be a jerk about it! :p :D

The software only scales the way the image displays, it does not actually resize the image. In other words, something that looks like an innocuous 640x480 image might in fact be a much larger one.

    Yeah, I know.
What I meant was that it scales it so that with images that are wider than forum/post frame, you don't end up with a side scrolling page when it loads. it makes it so you don't have to be as strictly careful with dimensional size; WxH, just file size for loading/viewing. :)

This is a basic question, but how would I go about taking pictures and ensuring they remain the correct size without having to alter any thing on my camera?

Personal favorite if you are on a Windows platform, XNVIEW. Resizes single or multiple (batch) images to custom or preset (i.e. 640x480, 800x600, etc).

Also available in mobile flavors (App is call ResizeMe). Free version does single images, purchased version does multiple images at a time.

I wouldn't go smaller than 800*XXX, I personally hate having to squint at some of the tiny pics people post here.

    No need to apologize :)

It's just something that will keep on changing with time, with monitor sizes and resolutions that keep going up as technology and demands keep growing. On my old 1280*764 screen a 640*480 pic filled up half my screen, but on my HD screen it's tiny all of sudden. Just the way things go.
