    How many would you buy, at a bare minimum, just to cover all of the bases?

    Two fixed blades... a big (8inch) and a small (3 1/2 inch) and a folder small, thin for slicing.

    These two take care of most all my knife needs in a pinch. So I'd just go with a SAK and a small machete.

    I would replace these three.

    [IMG]

    Emerson Mini CQC 15. I carry this one every day.

    Spyderco Military. I tuck it inside my waistband if I also want a longer blade and/or a great slicer with me.

    Fallkniven F1. My only outdoors knife for many, many years.

    There are a couple others I like enough to replace. But those three would cover all my bases.

    One big fixed, one small fixed, one big folder, one smaller folder, one keychain knife, one craft/use/abuse medium size folder.
    So totally about 5-6.

    Large fixed blade 8" to 10". Medium fixed blade 4" to 6".
    Edc folder non work
    Edc folder work
    Multi-tool

    So 5 is the magic number.

    traditional folder
    small folder (benchmade minigrip)
    big fixed (esse or mora)
    edc sized fixed (izula or candiru)
    multitool (OHT Wave or Skelletool)

    if were counting saws as blades than swap out the traditional with a Bahco laplander

    Victorinox Executive would be the first purchase.

    A lock-back folder in the 4" or smaller (closed) size would be next.

    A fixed blade around 4.5" would be third.

    A fixed blade (Machete) with about a 14" blade would be fourth.

    That would take care of all the basics for me.

    Great question! Thinking 'out loud' so to speak, I'd want:

    1. Spyderco Ladybug H1 Hawksbill SE
    2. Case full size trapper
    3. SAK Alox Farmer or Pioneer - X
    4. Spyderco Dragonfly 2 H1, PE
    5. Case Peanut
    6. LM Squirt PS-4 OR Gerber Dime
    7. Spyderco Pacific Salt SE (for car -- emergency use)
    8. LM Supertool 300 for car kit
    9. Probably half a dozen SAK Classics to replace missing items in the various FAK
    That ought to do it!
    L'chaim!

    A leatherman style cs, skeletool Cx, and a fixed blade in the 3"-3.5" range are my bare minimum, but I get by in those three just fine. The hardest choice would be which fixed blade as there are so many good ones now.

    Four.
    SwissChamp,
    Fullsized SwissTool,
    Victorinox Huntsman.
    And a Mora of some description.
    Naturally if they where stolen I would dedicate my life to hunting down and dealing with the bugger responsible. After all the item has just tried to kill me.

    Interesting question! If I were starting out again…

    * SAK Handyman
    * Swisstool Spirit
    * Gentleman's folder: Mnandi or Fällkniven.
    * Bigger folder: Sebenza or similar.
    * Woods knife: F1 or S1.
    * Keychain: Rambler.

    So that's six, excluding kitchen.
