Re-read the whole thread, and just realised I never gave a definitive answer... Hre they are, the five essentials (would be 6, but the OP said keys don't count):
    1-Glasses
    2-Cell phone
    3-Wallet
    4-Knife
    5-Flashlight

Next up would be pen, notebook and watch. Then multitool/SAK and gun.

I've EDC'ed this setup for 3+ years now loose in my front pockets where they are always handy. Everytime I experiment with other setups I always come back to these base items:

    - ARC-P AAA (my one indispensable item)
    - Vic Classic (for scissors & toothpick)
    - Carmex tube
    - Rolex Submariner (15 years & still going strong)

    Knife for office:
    - Vic Cadet II: slim, lightweight & non-threatening for office

    Knife for home/woods:
    - Small Sebenza + Leatherman P4

    Mine would have to be
Phone- For obvious reasons, to make calls.

Knife- I use a knife quite a bit so I will always have one on me.

Light- Be it a Surefire g2 or a Fenix E01 I will always have a flash light on me.

    Wallet- Everyone needs a wallet.

Atwood tool- An Atwood on the key chain, along with keys.

So this should easily get me through the day.

    Some very interesting answers.

It appears that a light and a knife of some sort (other than wallet, clothes, keys) top what most would consider "additional" EDC items - since most people EDCers or not carry a wallet and keys and (hopefully) are fully clothed. A multitool seems to be a close third place choice (this is my unscientific not counting impression mind you).

Then it gets pretty diverse - and I suspect situational based. For example, I don't carry a lighter - I don't smoke and my normal emergency plans have me getting to my house and bugging in so my EDC doesn't really contemplate needing to make fire. My office is 11 miles from home. Even without a car I'm going to keep moving to the extent possible and not make any sort of temporary camp. Fast and light is my mantra for getting home. I don't carry paracord typically although I can envision more uses than setting up a shelter.

But it does confirm one of my suspicions which is that a knife and a light are more or less universal EDC staples.
