Picked up a new watch today which I like, but noticed something and can't figure it out. Above the seconds display is a box with an array of LEDs, but I have no idea what they mean (if anything) and that's driving me nuts.

After half an hour on Google, I realized I didn't even really know how to describe the question, so I turn to you, my friends. Please help.

    Additional Info:
the pattern changes in accord with the seconds display, and repeats every 10 seconds (so 01 will display the same pattern as 11).

What make and model is the watch? It should be on the back of the case.

EDIT: Just a thought, but could you be looking at an abacus? There are a lot of variation of the abacus depending on the number subsystem (base 10 - decimal, base 2 - binary, base 16 - hexadecimal, etc) and the country it came from. The same way some watches have a 5 or 10 second subdial, your watch could have a 10 second abacus subdisplay.

There should be a folded slip of paper that explains all the watch functions.

As long as we're guessing: could it be a calendar?

( Never mind: that was a dumb idea I had!)

If it's some sort of code. We may need to see all the variations of it.. Like what pattern corresponds with how many seconds..

How about a battery indicator? or maybe it's a coded message that we understand subliminally and we are being controlled by alien beings pretending to be Japanese watch makers?

Armitron 40/8254. (I looked up your other thread) The review I find on the tube said it was just some sort of "screen saver" moving picture for looks. It's definitely not an abacus or some kind if indicator. Once you see it in motion it seems there's no real method to the picture. Only that it moves with the seconds.

    Sorry!

Vety strange. One would think that the 6x6 grid is some sort of representation of time. But you said it repeats it self
