Yea i was reading that yesterday.

I had the chance to own my fathers 86 Toyota pickup as my first car. I turned it down and he sold it for $600 some 10 years or so ago. It was brown, had a cap, no rust, body was in excellent condition and i think back every few months and regret turning it down.

Would have been great advertising for Toyota while they were recalling ;)

Vast., The trucks in most of the images are mostly 10 or more years old and extremely over built, beside that, their in a relativity rust free environment that makes them last even longer .
I've seen Toy trucks in New England completely fall to pieces from rust after running for 3 or 4 hundred thousand miles and someone puts the engine in another one good to go !
I'm not saying that Toyota does not still make a good product, I am however saying you won't get better than those oldies unless you pay through the nose for a new one !

    BE WELL .. GH

Ditto, like the saying goes, "they don't make them like they used to." Though Toyota trucks are still great and reliable vehicles, they are nothing compared to the older overbuilt/over-engineered models.

Oh and probably they main difference... Diesel. If they Toyota released diesel trucks here, they would only satisfy and handful of people, but boy would those people be pretty happy.

My wife owns a '00 (IIRC) Toyo Taco quad-cab short-bed and we love LOVE it.
If it were 4x4 It'd be (perfect) amazing, though the locking rear diff makes it more than capable off-road.
I'll post pics soon, as i'm in the hospital now and don't have access. If you have a chance to get one in excelent condition, do it. You probably won't ever regret it (unless you can't afford it, lol).

I've had Jeeps of all model, a dodge Dakota, and a Ford... 100 basically.
The only vehicle that was as much fun was my '96 wrangler. The '73 CJ is a blast too but, I never have to wrench on the Taco so those points give it the lead on my favorites list.

Something I've been oogling for a while, wanting to turn one into a trail/mud rig slash BOV is the Toyo FJ Cruiser. I test drove one and realize that the drive by wire feeling would be something that would take getting used to but I liked it overall. I'd like to do some 'weekend warrioring' before really getting into one though.

EDIT: Just realized Wes has the FJ I want in his sig line.
    Check it out.

    Solid front axle!
    Simple and solid design.
    Very few comfort amenities.

From what I've seen overseas, the hilux looked very similar to the pre-86 toyota pickup.

My dream vehicle is a diesel double cab hilux. Durable, capable, reliable, and fuel efficient! It's frustrating knowing they are still available in many other parts of the world . . .

Yes, a Toyota diesel would fly here. If the Hilux was brought here, it is more HD than the Texas Tacoma. At least the Hilux Surf is basically the same and not built in N. America. Yes, Squatch, that would be a nice ride.

Yeah, I still recall how one of those survived a brutal series of tests by the Top Gear crew. No wonder they are popular as Hell.

Isn't that the same truck as the older US Toyota mini trucks, and the later model Tacoma's?
