What's a super awesome compact wine opener/corkscrew for my EDC pack? I've been caught too many times traveling, at a hotel, go to pop wine, and don't have a corkscrew.

^^^ This. So much more utility than a plain wine tool

    +1 on the Victorinox SAK.

But if you don’t want to brute-force it every time, wine keys are the way to go. Leverage!

    Victorinox all day.

I'm not very deep into the SAK thing, but I got a Alox Cadet a few years back to see what all the fuzz was about. And I really liked it. The Cadet is very nice for EDC and some outdoor stuff, but for other endeavors, i.e. travel, there were a few useful tools missing.

Keeping with the recipe of success, I got the Sportsman, which is basically a Cadet with plastic scales and a few extra tools that I find quite useful in certain situations. I also got the eye glass driver that can be seated and carried inside the cork screw (not included from factory).

Nope Nope Nope Nope:nah_disagree:....using a SAK corkscrew is like bringing a butter knife to a gunfight. Get a proper 2-step waiter's corkscrew and be done with it if you're serious about opening wine. If not, use what you have, but remember failure IS an option if you use the wrong tool for the job. BTW, I own SAK and SAK-type knives. I purposely DON'T get models with a corkscrew as it's not a useful tool.

Yes, but get the 2-step models...a lot of the one step models like these won't get a long cork out without having to "pull" on the cork, thus negating the lever advantage

I'm an "inclusive" guy. I do drink a substantial amount of both, in fact. Oh, & I carry a "dedicated" opener for beer, too.

The cork screw is very useful if you wear glasses, and add the small screwdriver to it.

This is a Yeoman which IMO has the best tool set for the number of layers. Note the small driver in the corkscrew. It puts the Philips inline which is much easier to use, omits the double blade and opener for a single blade + combo tool, plus the scissors and magnifier. Some custom scales finished it off.

Yeoman come up on eBay pretty frequently but fetch $60+ these days.

Explorer is a nice option. Compact is great EDC addition too.

Forget about Vics. (i have a "decent" collection of those, none is imho really apt to open a bottle of wine).
Being me Italian, sorry to admit ( :) ) that Laguiole, forge en Aubrac, France, makes very good ones.
Not cheap, but's that should be a kind of a long lasting investment...

Or the Fieldmaster... basically the same as the Huntsman except no corkscrew... has a Phillips driver instead. Yeah I know, that rules out carrying the micro driver for eyeglasses!
