If you have any artists supply shops locally, they often carry a broad range of leads (array of colors, diameters, hardness). Not always the cheapest around, but often the best selections.

Has anyone given the Sharpie Liquid pencils a try?
They seem to write pretty good for me.

Can someone tell me if the Pentel graphgear pencil retracts when you press the clip to put it in your pocket because to me that would be the ideal situation.

Be careful with those Graphgears. I got one as a Christmas present years ago and loved it. Felt great to use. Then I think I must have left it in the bottom of a bag or something, and it snapped in half. The inner plastic lead containing sleeve is the main structure of those pencils and it can break where the metal exterior parts meet.

I tend to treat my writing instruments better than most people. It isn't terribly likely for me to suffer that problem.

Very rare to find the all metal 1000 in the chain stores. Your simplest option is an Amazon high rated art supply store. The GraphGear 1000 is an Asian market only release... similar to all of the cool Seiko's.

I've had a Pentel Graph Gear 1000 for I think 5+ years. I in fact bought it specifically because it retracted. Its really not that hard to find these. Most of the better known on-line pen shops have them -- believe me, I did NOT order mine from Asia! Without digging through a lot of records, definitely look at JetPens.com; based out in San Jose CA. Absolutely great customer service and quick shipping. Yes, they do specialize in Japanese products; but Pentel is also carried in the US by Amazon.

Office Depot/Max carries the GG 1000 in the Memphis area.

All I know is when I get the chance I will visit a few office supply stores and see what I can find.

These are what I have right now that can be pocket friendly
Papermate with a busted plastic body taped up.
Staedtler Mars 780 with lead a little hard for pencil writing
Pentech Dilbert plastic pencil that does put it's tip away
Papermate Dynagrip that also hides the tip.

Until further notice I reckon a slightly better repair of the fancier Papermate or the Staedtler will get carried.

Amazingly enough the Office Max/Depot stores in the area show the Graph Gear 1000 in Stock.
Just got to get a freaking job is all.

I've got the GG1000 in 0.3, but don't really like it. The rubber bits in the knurling are very distracting to me when I write with it.

It's been up on the shelf for most of the year. I'll give it another shot when I start a new journal.

As it happens it looks like I will not get the job where there was a form that said use pencil.

So for the time being I shall use this. The rectangular lead really isn't a problem in my testing. And the lead seems to have a decent balance of softness and hardness and writes dark enough to easily see.

And I have a second pencil and extra leads and erasers.

I've got one of those. Same name, but sold as a test taking pencil instead of a carpenter's pencil.

It's fun to play with. I wish the lead were a bit harder, though.

Cheers! What I meant was the GG 1000 is readily available on Amazon from boutique art supply stores... Amazon directly stocks them late summer for school supply season. I see the postings that the big box office supply stores are now stocking them. This was not the case last year when I bought mine. I might have to stop in at my local big boxes to procure a few backups! What also sold me was I was in search if a quality retractable as I carry mine clipped in the collar of my shirt or merino sweater.

    To make matters simply terrible.
The motor on our well water pump has burned out.
    Just lovely.

Used this to write down the numbers on the WAY out of production motor.

One of my early replies about mechanical pencils is over that-a-way (so as to not double-post)... :D

I recently bought a 2-pack of these to use as beaters. I'd like them better if they were an inch or so shorter, but they're pretty solid pencils.

Darn it. I got 0.9 mm leads thinking that is what the Duofold needs. Now I have 29 pieces of
.9mm and no pencil that uses it.
And I have to come up with 1.3mm somehow.
