unfortunately that is true and sad but if your really hurt and can muster a good yell the whistle will be the difference. Hopefully....

Whistle is mandatory safety gear for most orienteering meets. Any three-times repeated sound from a competitor that's gone down is instant cease navigating & find injured for everyone else on the course.

Fox 40 and a couple other odds and ends (ITW was brilliant to add a whistle to their sternum strap buckles) on person at all times in backcountry. EDC? well, usually. I have a lanyard with a Spyderco Byrd, windmill lighter, whistle and earplugs around my neck nearly all the time. Simple light and crucial should any be needed.

I EDC a whistle. I consider it to be my first line of defense in almost any bad situation. I would much rather go for my whistle than my knife or gun, given what my gun and knife weigh, its more than worth it.

I often use my whistle to communicate, as do I my flash light —another defense item of sorts— but I find myself off the beaten trail more often than not making this all the more situationally expected/logical.

Well I must admit, I have never once even considered having a whistle anywhere near my person. I always figured I don't have a dog so I don't need a whistle. But having read through the entirety of this thread for the past few minutes, I may have to reconsider.

Well, I must admit, I have no tritium either so I could kill two birds with one stone and go straight into a custom whistle…

I thought I heard a whistle just now actually, but it turns out it was just my bank account crying.

I will say, for the longest time I did not carry one. Then I started coaching my daughters Softball team. Made it so much easier to get attention across the field or even when they were in the parking lot. Have since used it a half dozen times instead of having to yell to get attention. So it has a perm spot on my keychain now...

You still HAVE a bank account? Well, ma'am, you are an exception on the ol' EDC Forum: our finances are non-existent. In fact, most of us live in cardboard boxes down dank alleys. We keep the small change that we collect from kind strangers in old socks that we tie to the ropes that hold our trousers up. True EDC carry. (Oh, and we use the computers at our free public libraries to access the Internet. And, by the way, most importantly, we only use socks without holes to store our money.)

Give it a few more months of EDC purchasing and you will no longer need that bank account ... life is simpler when you have no financial assets.

You're right, sir: I should have written "Give it a few more DAYS ..." Meanwhile, C.Boland93, try to find and set aside one of those big cardboard boxes that refrigerators are shipped in. It will made a snug, little home.

Well just got back from Harbor Freight to pick up my wife one. I go the budget route when it makes sense. Its hard to beat an aluminum tube whistle for under a buck.

Anything outdoors, a whistle can save a life. Is a dog part of your family? Carry a whistle in case they don't like to listen sometimes.

Note to self; must find a closely located bridge to help with the rain stability of the obviously architecturally sound box.

Shoot first, blow later.... Though the sound of the gunshot will likely be enough to get others' attention.

:D And also worth mentioning...if you wrap the whistle's keyring around the trigger, instead of the guard, you'll have a sort of 'whistle guard'. We can have those whistles just going off unsafe like;)In fact, someone should make a law...
