Coffee Snob here EDC ( every day coffee French Press (imho this is Real Coffee) Grind fresh beans boil water correct number of coffee scoops (i use 4 scoops of beans for a std size glass FP) pour in boiling water semi slow stir cover 3.5 minutes press semi slow enjoy In my SMB (sportmobile) use a melita one cup drip ok coffee Suitcase i carry instant have not tried the starbucks but will soon
boiling hot water burns coffee, and beans start losing flavor immediately after grinding. wait to grind your beans until the water comes to a boil (this allows the water to cool off, and all the flavor to be preserved)
I'm actually watching this video now and though he gets very specific with weighing and what not, I'm getting the gist of the FP method and think it'll suit my needs. My worry now moves to getting a good quality travel grinder as it seems like it's very important to using a FP. I've learned a lot in this thread, thanks for sharing what you do. Feel free to continue it, I'm eager to hear feedback and other opinions for travel coffee.
Best two travel grinders out there right now are the Hario Mini Mill Slim and Porlex Mini or Tall, all are suitable for FP to espresso and everything in between.
@ballistic That Porlex mini looks cool, I notice that's the one you have. Sign me up for a Porlex Mini, an Aeropress and an immersion heater and I think I'm ready to roll. Ok now we need to jam all of that into a 2"x2" cube. lol I kid ballistic you've been a champ helping, thanks.
No problem, glad I could help! Orphanespresso is great to deal with. Enjoy and have a safe trip! Brian
I use an Aeropress most of the time.. I take it with me when I travel. Now I also cold brew. http://www.toddycafe.com/ The Toddy system works great. I will fill a SS bottle with the concentrate and all I need is some hot water ..
I just suck it up and buy coffee while traveling. Those little coffee pots just don't get it for me, IMHO....
I haven't had a cup of coffee since St. Patrick's Day 1988. My boss had a stroke at his desk right after drinking a pot. CPR dummies are very dry and sterile, not so in the real world. He's still alive, so I guess it was worth it. I carry a barrier now.
I found 2 Zelco units as mentioned by the OP on ebay, I used the term "zelco" in the search box. Personally, I don't travel too far away from home, but, when I do, I usually use the coffee maker in the hotel room, or I hit Dunkin Donuts. I like DD coffee. I never claimed to be a coffee snob. I don't care for Starbucks at all.
Usually I use coffee bags if the trip lasts more than overnight. Otherwise, I keep coffee sticks in my bag. Lately it's been Folgers decaf and Starbucks Cinnamon and Cafe Mocha. Honestly, I can't taste the difference between the two if it wasn't for the flavoring.
