I wish I had kept mine from the 5th grade when I grew up in Japan on an army base.
I would mow a lawn for 3 buxs and then go off base and live like a king.
A dollar was 360 yen back then and I think I used used to buy these for about 25 cents.

So is Ebay the only way to get one or does any of the online knife sellers have them? I did a quick search of the places i use but could not find one and its confusing trying to find the size on ebay. When i search for a certain size the description is different then the title so what is the size listed in the title referring to?

FWIW, Lee Valley carries one as the "Japanese Carpenter's Knife", theirs has a 4" blade.

    Cheers, Ted

Sorry, this one is brass, not Ti

Figured I would throw pics of my Higo in the mix to give this thread a bump. Maybe we can get some more pics of these wonderfully simple and awesome knives.

What size is that one? I know they are all different, but it seems the smaller ones seem to have that cut out portion in the handle. I've owned two, both XLs, and neither had it. Thanks.

I think I need one of these. I was briefly toying with the idea of just carrying a straight razor, but mine actually scares me for anything but shaving because they open past straight.

You people are monsters! If When my wife catches me ordering another friction folder...
I found the Ti handle w/ blue steel and I see it in my future. EDCF keeps me constantly flirting with poverty.
I think the first step to joining the forms shouldn't be acceptance, it should be getting a PO box.

Why are some people saying I wouldn't carry these or at least not out of the house? Curious because it's an interesting knife and all Traditional Japanese cutlery intrigues me. TIA.

I'm guessing just because modern knives are "better" (faster, possibly safer, etc.). I'd carry one in my bag as my larger knife just to maybe intrigue people instead of scaring them. But, then, my A-knife is a small switch blade, so I just deal with scaring people who don't know they're legal here.

A switchblade is just a knife, it's a shame it's come to people fearing them. Are these any less safe than any other friction folder? They don't look so. IDK maybe they flex cause they are thin.

I'd imagine that the handles might fail sooner than others because they're so cheap. But, it would be another case of "why were you using a knife as a pry bar? That's what screwdrivers are for."

sent from a device without a real keyboard...sorry if something doesn't make sense.

I found my higonokami to be uncomfortable for anything but the lightest use, either a pain in the :censored: to open or hard to keep open (depends how tight you squish the handles), and the ergonomics for both avoiding the edge (same line as the handle!) and working with the knife are poor. Modern friction folders are better in all of these regards.

Still a charming knife, but those are the reasons that mine doesn't leave the house.
