Thanks again to everyone for the warm welcome and advice!
Yep you are right with the law. I carry a 5.3cm knife every time I go hiking or climbing however I do not carry any knife on me just walking around Tokyo. The knife length law is objective however the justifiable use law is completely subjective to the arresting officer. Seeing that you can be held for almost a month in Japan without being charged with any crime I rather avoid the hassle then carry a 2 inch blade.
I miss my knives back home.... and concealed carry

Hello from Ky!
Welcome from Illinois, USA!
Welcome from Seattle! There's some amazing leather products made in Japan. Do you have any favorite makers?
Welcome to the FUN!
No favorites here. In fact, I've recently become vegan and now avoid leather. Ha! I used to love leather: the smell, the feel, the durability. Alas. I am happy, though, with the nylon, teflon, steel and plastic of my Fatboy.
My childhood home is in Illinois. High-five across the ocean!
Welcome! I studied Japanese (work as a translator now) and lived in Japan for a year, very cool place! Thanks for the clarification on the EDC laws, I was always afraid to carry my dragonfly because of the locking blade, so I kept to Swiss army knives mostly.
Welcome from the UK.
I'm in Ottawa. Where did you grow up?
