No matter what I did mine never worked well. I cut the nib, I tried different lengths of Zebra springs...never got it to work right with the space pen refill. I gave up on it. I tried everything that was throw at me. Done.
    Love the pen body, though.

i hate the space pen refill. like the reliability of it but i cant stand the way it writes, so instead i modified a gel insert from a 301 (302?) trimmed it down, put the stopper on it from the original insert. trimmed about 30% off the spring. trimmed the clear nib down to about 2mm. thing works perfectly!

still though i think I'm going to buy a retro 51 tornado and see if that will replace my gel 701

I just feel that the "perfect" pen for me is not one that I've ever had in my hand:(

Doesn't show up real well, wish I could have used some of my columbian emeralds but they were all too large so ruby it is!

Sorry for bringing up an old post but I couldn't find any other thread with extensive talk about making a matching 701 pencil. Most people take the guts out of the M-402 (pencil) and put them into a F-701 (pen) sleeve. Has anyone tried removing the tail of a M-402 (pencil) and dropping it into the M-701 (pencil) to get an "all stainless" pencil?

Hi Rick, is this the F-701 body or the M-701 body? I was hoping to use the M-701 and just swap out the end piece (clicker). Not sure if it's even possible. The only mod I can find is dropping the entire M-402 into an F-701 sleeve?

It may be a resurrected thread, but this is, out of all the pens I have ever owned, my favorite, with the telescoping zebra a close second.

Can the Zebra gel insert work in the 701?

Yes. If I remember correctly I needed to cut it down some. Just match the current refill and good to go.

I guess I must be "challenged". I tried to exchange the brass clicky from my Zebra 402 into my Zebra 701 and I could not get the brass clicky screwed all the way into the 701 for the life of me. I would connect with the plastic threaded sleeve but stopped short of screwing all the way down by 1/8" or so. What the heck am I doing wrong?

    Interesting.

If the plastic insert is not damaged it should screw all the way down. Take off tip and remove cartridge. try again.

I forgot to mention that I also removed the plastic piece in the tip so that I could use the fisher ink refill

By the end of this project, this pen is gonna have a sight and a telescoping barrel with clicking silencer, and a firesteel for good health.

Just got the urge to start EDC'ing a pen and wanted to say thanks to rickinFL and everyone for all the detailed info on modding what seems to be a classic.
