HAM Radio - All I hear are crickets

    It is by no means dead, in fact in many areas its growing like wildfire.

    There are so many facets to ham radio, perhaps you are limiting yourself by just thinking VHF. Consider HF, MF, and other forms. Personally I do mostly HF DXing and contesting, and that area of the sport is on fire with innovation and growth.

    There's also a lot of new hams coming into the hobby because of the requirement for a ham license to fly a drone.

    Whatever your interest area, there's something to check out. If you wish to stay around VHF, there's satellite comms, there's EME, VHF contesting, VHF DXing, etc., etc.
