That's one thing I dislike about MRE's... no bread. I've been adding bags of the just add water biscuit mix to my food storage.

I've heard people talk about canned bread but I've never seen any, I'm not sure if it's something they still make.

For about a buck for a 6 biscuit mix, I don't think you can go wrong.

I recently read a article/post about making hardtack but I can't remember where. (Wish I could
find an elf, I'd give a lot for a case of Lembas. :D)

I still need to do my bannock class over on BCUSA, but I love bread so much I'd hate to go
without during an emergency. I've also started stocking up on raw honey... fresh baked
biscuits with honey and you're surviving in style.

No doubt. And thanks for the reminder...I've been meaning to look up single serve packs of honey on amazon. :D It has antibacterial properties too. (iFAK item multi use FTW!)

That was a pretty easy BushClass Requirement. The hardest part was finding an easy recipe on their site. I forgot mine, but I can link it...gimme a minute...

Standard damper recipe here, which is basically bannock, is just 2 handfuls of SR flour, pinch of salt and enough water to make a sticky dough. Then sit in the hot coals, in foil if you're squeamish ;). I've made damper with an aded oatmeal and honey sachet and cooked it in a Swedish mess kit pot with lid

Anything cooked over a campfire requires a little ash for proper seasoning. :p

In the Northeastern US there used to be for sale all over a canned--well sort of "black bread"--I am talking about years ago--it came in a can the size of the larger Cambells soup cans and you opened both ends of the can with a can opener and pushed it out---I remember eating it at my Grandmothers.
You can still find canned cheese (which I have) and canned eggs. The canned eggs and cheese I have only observed sold outside of the US.

Intersting. Never heard of it. Do they make it anymore? I'd be interested in having that.

You can still buy it at Fred Meyer/ Kroger stores. Probably a year or more, expiration date.

    Speaking of expiration dates---
A friend tells a story of a Gunnery Sergeant he knew in the 1980's who supposedly had carried one of the small cans of Vienna sausage in his BDU pockets since Viet Nam, the singular same can. My friend said the can's exterior had become polished to a high gleam Aluminum over the entire can from rubbing against the pocket's interior cloth over the years. Of course the label long long gone....
He said this Gunny would every so often pull that can out display it and advise loudly he was going to eat it "some day".

Brave man. :) That's cool though. We all like to know how long shelf stable is actually shelf stable.
I just opened and ate an MRE the other day, noting the received date Wifey had penned on it when I realized that the vendor had placed a ten year expiration date on it. I knew they were advertised as 5 years, but I was impressed that the vendor would put an extra five years, ya know?

I have heard--but have no idea if it's true or not--and I have never seen an MRE in this condition but---there are claims that even if the MRE content has turned black---you could eat them---no information on the taste---just that you could eat them under starvation conditions and receive some of their remaining nutrition ?? This is supposedly due to the process that kills contamination when the MRE is packaged?
Believe me I have no facts to back this up---?
