If you grab it, it will secrete a fluid that will give you a chemical burn and blister your skin. I am trying to link an article, but the site won't let me.

Hunter s Gatherer, when pestered they leak hemolymph (bug blood) out of their joints. The hemolymph contains contains cantharidin, which can cause blisters on human skin (not likely on tough skin such as your palm, but likely somewhere soft, like your neck) or probably in a predator's mouth. When the burning and blisters form, the pestering stops! At least that is the theory - often they are smashed by that point. They are not dangerous, but do deserve some respect!

Tell me what to look for, while I have been home bound for the last month, I am normally in the woods as much as possible. I am sure I can pack some stuff up and ship it off to ya! Although, I am sure the fun is in finding it right? ;)

I think I'll just stick to looking at the pictures. Handsome blue devil for a bug.

Nah, I'm sticking to beetles only for collecting. Takes too much space for big stuff like that!

And, to clarify, the blue beetle from Rutha73 is Gibbifer californicus, which is not a blister beetle. It is a fungus beetle. They are harmless, but when you pin them the blue color fades to a sickly yellow/gray/green which is too bad.

FL, The hunt is a good part of the experience, that is for sure. I have specimens that people have collected for me and if they are something I don't already have it is nice. The families Buprestidae, Cerambycidae, Scaribidae, and Cicindelidae are the ones I have the most interest in. If you find some really pretty beetle how about shooting a picture and sending it over?

Not sure if this is one of the ones you are looking for, but he flew into my shop, and died on my workbench.

FL bum, I recognize it as "the Grapevine Beetle" - Pelidnota punctata. Some have more pronounced spots on them, and some have darker metallic green legs, but they are all the same species. We had them when I lived in MO, and I always thought they were interesting.

They are one of the scarab beetles, a family which I collect, but I already have a good supply of them. Thank you for the effort to photograph it and send out the photos, I appreciate it!

I'll gladly look at more beetle photos. :)

Entomology was the one required course for my forestry degree that I was allowed to substitute for. My excuse to my advisor was that I was allergic to bee stings.

I don't see my original pocket dump, so here it is - out of order (sorry!). Interesting how much more stuff (and higher quality stuff) I carry around now!
