ok one of the guys i work with broke the end off of a tap. he only broke about a 1/4 in off the end i want to make something out of it but im not sure what. help me with some ideas. the tap was a 9mm so it about the size of a pen so its not a huge tap. looks similar to this but with a little of the thread part broke off.

How about some more parameters to work with. Do you mainly want to re-purpose what left, or turn whats left into a raw material for something else? Its a tool steel, so in the right hands I'm willing to bet it could into something.

i want to re-purpose whats left into something else, i know i can just grind off the part thats proke and make it into a bottom tap but i want to keep the original shape so you can tell it was a tap but make it serve another purpose. maybe like a keychain tool .

Take out 3/4 of the cutting things and make it a corkscrew!

I'm not sure what you'd make with it, but I'd like to see it heated up and twisted.

Can you drill through the center and make it into a whistle?

If he can bore the length of that tap, he'd better keep his mouth shut. Otherwise, he'll be flooded with requests for people like me!

That's some tough stuff!!! I don't think it'd be very easy to bore through! Heat up, twist and stretch the cutting part of the tap, Lathe the other end into a marking scribe or something? Grind into a knife blade?

It's probably made of High Speed Steel so it can't be bent or drilled or twisted,,, but it can be ground or spark eroded. If it is made of carbon steel then it could be annealed and re-shaped,,,

The only thing I've ever made with a broken tap is to grind the end into a point and use it as a centre pop

If it were mine I'd throw it away

The fact that the tip broke, rather than bending, tells you a lot about the steel from which it is made. Perhaps that could lead to some ideas for re-use (or not).

You would struggle. It would need to be ground, but because its tool steel, you would need to do something thats possible to do . Drilling it could be a struggle.
