I gotta go with the "so much for Gerber" crowd - the "hand-flick" opening system is great and I will probably keep a couple of their multi-tools, but as for the rest...not so much.

Edit: And while I'm enjoying collecting a couple of the Atwood pieces - I'm not sure I can work up the nerve to use a $90 purchase as a bottle opener. ;D

The best part is the lack of a knife blade: I can carry a Shard into buildings where I can't take a pocketknife -- or an Artifact, with that little X-Acto blade. Come on, Gerber, come on, come on!

I had a nice email dialogue with a lady at Gerber Sales, and she said they didn't even have any more around or she s]would have sent me one. She also said they were surprised by how many people were asking for the Shard top be a retail product: "We've had such an outpour of requests for this product, it has really been incredible. I'm unsure why the decision to offer these via our Website has been reneged but I'm hoping they'll release it at least by next year." So, you know, hope springs eternal.

Anyone have one they would part with? Or any makers who want to produce one?

    - Will

Anyone know when and where Gerber is going to be at a convention? Maybe we can storm their booth and get one.

those are perfect for my buddies who love my Atwoods, but would never pay atwood prices for a keychain tool.

No disrespect to Mr. Atwood intended, but he's not the first person to make a flat piece of metal with more than one intended use, so it's not really fair to call it a copy.

What's the deal with the UK and locking-blade knives? You're not going to tell me they're all regulated, are you? Non-locking blades are far more dangerous than locking blades.

There was a court case that deemed a locking blade to be the same for intents of the law as a fixed blade. For this reason they are illegal to carry in public without lawful authority or reasonable excuse.

The Artifact uses a blade from a hobby knife! It's not a bayonet for Bob's sake! By that logic, the locking 1.5" blade on my Sebertool M4 (MADE IN ENGLAND, ahem) would be grounds to arrest me. British courts are stupid. I mean that in the best way possible.

Reasonable excuse: "Sometimes I need to cut things and I don't want the blade to close on my finger."

The blade on the Artifact was what put me off of buying it. But the Shard seems to be perfect for me. :woohoo:
