I use warm tap water. The majority of the time, that's about all it needs. Some will say only use distilled water, but I haven't had any problems and cleaning under a gently running tap is so much easier.

When more is needed, the completely disassemblable (not sure if that's a word) design of the 580 is great. Many will clean it with pen flush, whether store bought or homemade (you can find plenty of recipes online). But being able to open up the pen and get in there with a cotton swab is convenient. When Sailor Yama-dori left a bit of blue-green residue behind in my 580, I actually wiped out the body with a disposable eye glass wipe and it came right off.

    This week's ink:

    Rohrer and Klingner Sepia

Very nice brown-black color. Interestingly, when I got some on a paper towel, it dried with a definite blue-green tint around the edges. But I don't see that in the writing, it's all brown-black.

Very dry ink. Out of all the inks I've tried in my Pilot Prera, this is the hardest one to start. Actually have to turn the converter knob to get some ink through the feed to get it going. Dries very quickly.

I've been using Diamine Syrah for a few days and now and am really liking it. I may have to add a bottle to my list to get.

Also inked up Diamine Marine in my Pilot CH91 SFM. I like Steel Blue better so far. Marine is lighter.

I just got a bottle of Diamine Green/Black and one of Rohrer&Klingner Salix. Will have to decide which pen will get what.

I'm on Noodlers Red-Black, an old favorite, this week. The shading is fantastic out of my flex nib Konrad!!

I have that Red Dragon ink and it's great. Interestingly enough, when I see it next to your orange TWSBI, it makes the ink look a lot more orange than it normally does.

Diamine Ancient Copper at the mo. Really like the shading even on my fine nibs. Usually a big fan of blue inks (Diamine Florida Blue is a fave) but recently have been looking more at orange/red/yellowy inks as well as looking at some interesting greens. Good for everyday writing I think.

I really like mine. I've found that it's a bit light reactive though. The note I've had on my fridge with neighbours' names on it (for a few months) has turned more of a purple shade. Still great, just not how it started.

I tend to run a lot more pens/inks when classes are in full swing. Studying for exams right now and breaking up sections of the notes by color.

    Noodler's Purple (580 EF)
    R&K Morinda (580 F)
    Noodler's Gruene Cactus Eel (Vac700 M)
    Noodler's Navy (Pilot 78G)
    Diamine Marine (Pilot CH91 SFM)

How do you find the 580 Fine nib? Practical for everyday writing? I make a lot of notes at work and my medium and broad nibs are sometimes a little too broad for my notepads, and for annotating documents.

it was important for me to find an ink that could survive the occasional spill, so i got a bottle of bulletproof black....

I soaked a bulletproof black ink note in rubbing alcohol and dish soap solution for 24hours. The paper started to fall apart but the lines were still super sharp and jet perfect black.

congratulations Noodlers!!! I am very impressed.

The F is my favorite of my 580 nibs for daily use. I can easily write in 5mm grid paper, and do a lot for class/studying. I would say my print is medium to med-small sized. I am almost always carrying either my 580 F or EF nib to work and school. They actually write about the same width line and both around what I would call Fine.

As a comparison, the 580 F nib is about the same as the Pilot Metro M, and considerably thicker than the hairline Metro F. It is definitely narrower than a Lamy M, and just a bit wider than a Lamy EF (I don't have a Lamy F to compare). Although it is about the same as the 580 EF, there is a clear difference between the 580 F and 580 M and Vac700 M.
