EDCForums is a private forum created to provide a friendly, collaborative place for people from all over the world to share their knowledge and use of everyday carry items. Every member, by participating, agrees to the forum's Terms of Service and to abide by the following rules and standards of conduct. 1. The Golden Rule: Treat others as you'd wish to be treated and with mutual respect. Our members live all over the world, representing diverse cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds. Stay on topic and do not engage in running conversations unrelated to a thread’s subject. Post topics unrelated to EDC in the Break Room. Do not start threads with the obvious potential to turn political, religious, or confrontational. Do not respond to threads with emoji or one-word replies to pad your post count. Do not bait, troll, or flame. Repeat violators will be banned. Do not engage trolls. Use the Report function to alert staff. Disagree politely or take your discussion to private conversation. 2. Language and Content:Do not post foul, racist, sexist, political, criminal, or bigoted language, links, graphics, photos, or other media or use acronyms and abbreviations expressing the same. If you wouldn't say it to your grandmother, mother, clergyman, or a kindergarten class, don’t say it here. Language and images may be edited at the discretion of EDCF staff. 3. Hotlinked images: Do not directly link to an image owned and hosted on another server, blog, website, or social media site. See "Hotlinking Images and Why You Shouldn't" for more information. Go here (link) for help using free image-hosting sites. 4. Private Communication: Do not re-post any content from private communications, e.g., emails or forum messages. 5. ONLY ONE USER ID per person is allowed. Do not create multiple accounts. Message a staff member if you need assistance with your username or other detail on your account. For issues with your password, use the EDCF password issues email or message a staff member. Do not use EDCF, EDCForums or similar, or use a temporary or disposable email in the address you provide when joining. 6. Members who shill, attempt to swindle other members, or spam the forum will be banned. Posts that appear to staff as spamming or shilling will be treated as such, no questions asked. 7. Illegal or Criminal Activities: Do not discuss, advocate, or suggest illegal activity of any kind. 8. Unofficial Clubs or Guilds: No special clubs or guilds are allowed at EDCForums. The forum is a place where everyone is welcome. 9. Giveaways and Contests: Our members have proved to be very generous in their support of contests and giveaways. If you would like to hold such an event, please message an administrator. 10. Offers to Buy/Sell/Trade: Do not post an offer or feeler to buy, sell, or trade in a sub-forum other than the Buy/Sell/Trade sub-forum. Members must have a post-count of fifteen (15) before they can view the B/S/T sub-forum. Rules specific to B/S/T participation are here. 11. Product Sellers/Manufacturers/Hobbyists: Do not post or otherwise share business-or product-related content or images unless you are a supporting manufacturer, sponsor, or craftsman. Rules below are under revision and will be posted ASAP. 12. Deal Spotting is prohibited. Defined as posting an external source or seller of a product, with or without price, URL/web address or promo code. It’s a form of passive advertising for the posted source, and is unfair to the enterprises that support EDCForums by supplying product(s) to the forum store. This policy is in no way intended to curtail or discourage organic member-discussion of gear or products.13. Product Reviews by Members Members who maintain a product review site may not post external links to their written reviews; however, we encourage and welcome direct posts of wholly independent, non-commercial written reviews in their entirety.Video reviews that meet the following criteria may be posted: must reside on a video-hosting site, e.g. YouTube and Vimeo. Both the video channel and the reviews must be commerce-free, independent, non-commercial, non-sponsored and non-compensated, as defined within this rule.An independent review is one where the reviewer purchases the reviewed product, has no connection with the product seller, and the review is not otherwise sponsored or compensated — in other words, an arms-length review. Please observe Rule 12. Deal Spotting when posting reviews. Sponsored or compensated reviews are not permitted. Defined as a review where reviewer receives any form of compensation from the product supplier, seller or manufacturer.“Compensation” could be monetary payment, paid advertising agreement, affiliate-sales agreement, or where the reviewed product was provided by product seller or manufacturer — whether temporarily or permanently — to facilitate the review. If you’re unsure whether or not your review complies, or have questions, please message a staff member before posting. (Staff list). Federal Trade Commision (FTC)- Mandated Disclosures and Product Reviews The FTC requires proper disclosure for non-independent reviews; but it may be that no disclosure is required for wholly independent reviews (the only kind EDCF allows). This FTC publication, The FTC's Endorsement Guides (rev 2013) provides guidance. Good starting point: pg. 4, When Does the FTC Act Apply to Endorsements? Over-disclosure is always better than under-disclosure. Reviewers have sole responsibility for determining whether or not a disclosure is required. 14. Staff Action The staff monitors forum activity, and takes appropriate action when policy violations occur. Depending on the violation, a member might simply be cautioned and reminded of the applicable rule; or a post might be edited, locked or removed. In some circumstances, where a pattern of infractions exists, a member’s account-privileges might be temporarily suspended. In rare, extreme cases, a member’s user-account could be permanently revoked (aka banned). It is impossible to include every conceivable example of inappropriate member behavior in these rules. Consequently, forum staff may moderate threads or posts based on content or behavior that, in their judgment, doesn't comply with the spirit of these policies. Such staff decisions and actions will have the same force and effect as the written rules. If any member has questions or concerns about a staff decision or action, they should address by messaging (private conversation/PC) a staff member, and not discuss, debate or question in the open-forum. Doing so is disruptive and itself a rule violation. We encourage members to help maintain the forum’s integrity by using the “Report” function when inappropriate content or rule violations are seen. We appreciate your conscientious adherence to EDCF's community policies. It helps the forum remain member-, family- and workplace-friendly and an enjoyable place to interact with fellow gear-nuts!
