Ok here is my first attempt at making a custom handle for a knife. It is inspired by the Helle Viking. I love the Mora but the handle seemed out of proportion to the blade. Please let me know what you think and any tips for future project . I ordered another mora for the blade to try with a fancier wood handle[IMG]

Looks good. How'd you make it? Hollow it down the center, drop the tang in, and glue? Or using two slabs and carving in space for the tang?

I hollowed the center and used epoxy. Even using a drill press i t appears I was a bit off. The blade angles up just a tad. Lesson learned I need to use a square to double check before drilling

I did a couple stick tangs like this, and for the final fit, put the blade in a vice, wrap with a wet rag and heat the end of the tang hot enough to burn it into the handle.

Weren't you worried about ruining the temper of the blade by heating it

Yep, but the wet rag took care of that problem. May also just be simpler to put the blade into a container of water with only the tang exposed. I was thinking the Mora tangs are straight? That makes it a little easier, because you only need to heat the very tip - possibly grind it to a point. Saves a lot of time and gets an almost perfect fit.
