Just finished my first field notes cover ( will also take a standard UK passport) Veg tan leather finished in Fiebings Spanish Brown and 0.8mm Ritza Havana Thread. With a suede lining inside. Also takes a couple of credit cards and an SD card, plus another full length pocket underneath these. I make all kinds. Leather belts, bags, rifle slings etc also bags from man made materials as well. Plenty of threads on here of stuff I have made Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Excellent work! The leather is gorgeous - did you age it or purchase it that way? I'm a big fan of items that look/are broken in. I've experimented a few times with new leather, with varied results. Sent from my Moto G (5) Plus using Tapatalk
Lucky for me its all down to the dye. Colours like black and dark brown seem to completely dye the product that colour. The Spanish brown has 3 or 4 coats and is still a bit translucent. I am doing a black cover at the moment, should have it finished in a few days. Black is jet black after about two coats. To give you an idea, these wallets are the same type of leather and the dye is the same make and type, the brown is the same as the one I used for this cover Untitled by Leaky5, on Flickr
I have been playing about with a more distressed look and found a good Youtube video (type 'gradient or patina' all of it into youtube and you will find the video). I used paper kitchen towel and just put a small amout of dye onto it, dabbed it off a bit on some more towel and then gentley rubbed it onto the leather in circular patterens. Building up the pattern I wanted and kept rubbing even when the towel was out of dye. A couple of added advantages. 1/ I did each piece in one go, I normally do about 6 coats and have to wait for the previuos one to dry before doing the next one. 2/ It is dry and ready to polish much quicker becuase of point one. 3/ An added advange is that is uses much less dye (see 2nd picture) I would probably have use close to a whole pot for this amout of leather before.
