My last duty gun, before my department mandated Glocks, was a 4506. It was a whole lot of steel to carry but very reassuring. And I carried it in a leather holster...probably why my back is shot today
A lot of the characteristics of the Smith and Wesson fell out of favor over the years. The magazine disconnect, the slide mounted safety, even the frame material may not be desirable but there is something inherently cool about these old Smiths. They have a classic almost retro look that I love.
I made the mistake of passing up on my buddy's old duty 5946 a few years back, so when I saw the DA/SA in a small concealable package, I had to jump on it. It's replacing my Shield as my spring/summer, so I have made a few changes to it. First was removing the magazine disconnect. I don't have it on any of my other carry pieces, so I didn't see a need for it here. Second is putting some Trijicons on it, and finally, I am changing all of the springs since it is a police trade-in and I am not sure when it was serviced last. Once I have it apart, I will probably polish up the drawbar and put the 6946 Hammer spring to drop the DA weight a little bit. It's the same trick that I do to all of my Beretta 92s and it helps. The only thing that I wish I could change would be to make it decock only, but it's not necessary.
I inherited a S&W 4046 from from my father. I carried it as duty gun for several years when I worked for another agency. The trigger on the 4046 is definitely different from the DA/SA models. My biggest dislike about that model was the trigger reset. After spending 20 plus years carrying some variant of the DA /SA style pistols I have recently have grown very fond of the 1911 /2011 SA style pistols.
I can relate, we switch from the S&W 6906 to the Sign P226 .40. Huge difference in weight. It doesn't seem like much difference until you carried on your hip 12-16 hours a day for several years. Somehow the aches and pains start creeping in and never leave!
Received and installed my first RMR. Now I wait for the Loctite to cure. The Loctite on my counter and all over my fingers cured nicely. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
