After reading blazinworm's file knife thread I decided to get back to my own file knife. I started it last winter and for whatever reason it got put on the bench and left.

Here are some progress picture from the past year,

File after I annealed it in my charcoal grill.

Here is my home made Micarta scales made from some old khaki shorts.

Now I just have to harden the steel, and put the final edge back on it and attach the micarta scales.

What is the difference in anneal at the beginning and the final hardening? How do you do the final hardening?

The anneal at first softens the steel so it is workable. A high heat and slowwwww cooling. I put it in a charcoal BBQ grill took it out while it was red hot and put it in a bucket of vermiculite.

The final heat treat will be high heat again and a quick quench in canola oil (or some other kind of oil) that will bring the hardness back up. Then you have to temper in an oven. ~425 degrees for a couple hours. To take the brittleness out of it.

Well I cleaned up the last little bit before I harden it and put the final edge on. I also have the rough shape of the scales done and will finish them when they get attached to the knife.
