I'd like to hear some of your favorite reviewers on youtube. I'm able to find a fair amount of videos when I'm searching for something specific. Yet I haven't come across too many reviewers that put together a ton of good reviews on all things EDC. I think it's easy to find people reviewing knives, flashlights, and guns. But I'm more interested in pack reviews, smaller keychain gadgets, pens, and maybe even some philosophy/techniques. Thanks!
Me. Oh, wait, that sounds arrogant. Well, I really like Stephan's reviews http://www.youtube.com/user/stschmalhaus. He is on this forum too, I think. There is a guy called milpic1 that has every piece of gear ever made by 5.11. He has caused a wallet hemorrhage or two. One guy who has a really good vids is a guy named xdmatt1320. Oh, and I like futn nancy, too. I don't have time to watch 45 minute gear oddysies, but if I am going to buy something kinda spendy, I will check to see if he has a review of it. His review of the Fenix LD20 is what got me into this addiction.
+1 StSchmalhaus. I find his reviews to be far more interesting than Nutnfancy's. There's also this guy called ATF6281914. You might want to check out his vids AND he's giving away a Benchmade 710 for free! Go make a video response before Nov. 24 for your chance to win it.
Cutterleylover has some very good you tube videos on knives and some gear. Stomdran's how to braiding paracord videos are some of my favorites aslo.
I like Nutnfancy's reviews. He does mostly focus on blades & guns (both long guns and handguns) and, to a lesser extent, torches in tabletop reviews. There are older videos of his reviewing such things as 5.11 pants, electronic hearing protection, tactical gloves, and tents. CutleryLover has good review when he actually is reviewing a product. He seems to be on a kick of testing hot sauces for a while now. His channel can be very entertaining. RoscoeBa has good reviews of a lot of Maxpedition bags & accessories plus other EDC or interesting things. Most of her product review videos have "360 degree review" somewhere it their titles.
I have only seen two of his as I really don't have the time. The two I saw was because some people wanted me to see them and informed me in advance about what I would see. They where right. It really had the appearance that he was talking about things he had never done. He explained how a group of what is now about 10k people have accomplished where doing it wrong. We can find example after example of people who tried things his way and failed. I have serious doubts anyone who tried to do it his way was successful. I would not have been too critical if he was on a day trip but the moment he was critical of a particular group he lost some credibility with me. He also mentioned (the real deal) It looked like a park to me. He mentioned backpackers, those of us that have done more than 2000 miles in a single trip did it all wrong.
+1 RoscoeBa, she has been one of my favorites from the onset of my EDC internet habit, although she's been quiet lately. Nutnfancy can be quite a windbag at times but I still like him and what he does, just have to filter through some of it. I freakin' LOVE some of his snowy campfire stuff, especially when it's 109 here for 90 days or w/e happened this year. I have more gear based on his recommendations than I care to admit but all of it has been good stuff. (Spyderco Delica, 4Sevens flashlights, Leatherman Charge Tti, etc.) Hickock45 makes shooting a gun look about as fun as humanly possible. Alot of people call this guy Hickock45 Jr. but I recommend his vids, seems very down to earth and offers interesting/useful info.
Go with people who do week or longer winter backpacking and you will see a huge contrast. It is physically impossible to carry enough food to cover the calories you are burning, carrying an axe cuts too deep into the potential food supply. It is apparent he is not a huge distance from his truck. This looks to be a day trip and not very deep. You can easily find wilderness groups that do this on a regular basis. Give it a try sometime, the people that do this don't make video's that I am aware of but you can do it with them in real life. Get used to using snow shoes.
My comment about Nutnfancy was definitely sarcastic. Some of his videos are-ok. But alot of them are just terrible.. and that tactical scooter is a hoot if anyone wants a good laugh.
Heres the thing on these youtube "reviews" I don't need to know it is made of Cordura or that it has YKK zippers. That s*&t is on the makers site. Show me the inside, the pocket layout, show me the bag on you or someone, show how it handles with a load in it. And do this in 10 minutes or less. It can be done. RoscoeBa is one of the better ones. I messaged her a few times with questions and she is really nice. MilPic I like him, he's German yes? Guy goes by Tactical 6 string did some great reviews on the older and new Typhoon.
I enjoy the ramblinga of X4CTO. His videos are a little long sometimes and a tad sexual on occasion but he's pretty good Sent from my ADR6350
I have more consecutive miles in a single day, single week, single month and possibly single four month period than at least 99% of the members in here. I really can't tell a good pack from a great pack in a day no matter how far I carry it, I can however tell a bad pack pretty quickly. I am not that good at evaluating it. I can start feeling a real difference after several days. This of course is from a carrying standpoint.
I understand what your saying Jon. My main complaint with YT reviews is most spend 5 or 10 minutes telling what the bag/pack/pocket is made out of, where its made, who makes it, etc. Most repeat what another reviewer has stated.
I like to think my review style on my channel is more about what I like, and what others would look about the knife, and not so much about specs. I do list them and talk about them. But one guy said "You're like a guy coming to a party and saying 'Hey I bought this. It's cool' and I like that." So hey, whatever works.
I like cutlerylover, but he does hot sauce reviews a lot lately...which I kinda like and don't like. I like it because he's kinda doing his own thing, but dont like because I miss the knife reviews.
A lot of the youtube guys tend to go off onto new things and themes on occasion. MrJimboFox for example enjoys gourmet sodas, but he was wise enough to start another channel for that. I enjoy Gourmet Soda, too. In general I like when channel owners go off for a bit on new subjects. Keeps things fresh. 9 out of 10 times the stuff I'm into? They're into. So it's always cool to know people over several forums and on youtube who enjoy the same things as me.
