I ran through the market and took some quick shots before work. Those are the garlands I wrote about earlier. Goal of every Zibelemärit is or used to be to get there super early and find the most beautiful garland to buy. I found a nice one for my family, but had no time to take pictures and now it's already dark. Maybe tomorrow. Next year I'll ask for a free day and try to take some nicer pics. And thanks to MarriedTheMedic for the likes!
This piece of art we had to deconstruct today. I had to help build it six weeks ago and I never thought it would hold! Well, google what Unsichere Konstruktion means. That "artist" had no idea what he was doing. And quite a lot of people actually walked over that platform/installation/art... And finally a super crappy pic of my Delica 4 that I carry when working as stagehand:
I had a case of acute hearing loss and was super freaked out, because of the tinnitus after my hearing came back. So I locked myself in my room and listened to audio books for a few days. Had nothing to report really, nor show, because I didn't do stuff. ^^ Was working today, so despite the bad quality, my work knife: Cut better than the cutter, so I used it for making new diffusers. Aaand coffee break!
Nice thread an nice collection of knives you got going there! That's the first time I hear of a knife like that making it through Andy's QC. I'm sure he would have loved the chance to correct his mistake, but I'm guessing you didn't want to send it all the way back to the US again. Good to see you got it fixed again though
Thank you very much! And yes, I didn't want to send it back. Sometimes knives get stuck at the customs, because the laws regarding knives and weapons changed (a lot) in 2009 and many custom officers don't know that (yet). I was so glad the knife made it to my home without a detour, I could not let go of it. I'm sure Andy would have done it, but besides the blade the knife came in perfect condition. Didn't regret the purchase for a second.
I understand completely. Not to mention the costs of shipping and customs fees that go with it (I suspect those are even higher in Switzerland then they are here in NL). I had a scandi Hiking Buddy that got some bad stains on the handle from a Rick Lowe sheath that wasn't properly finished. When Andy heard about it he offered me a free spa-treatment but I just didn't want to deal with all the shipping hassle and extra costs & I ended up selling the knife instead as the stains completely ruined the knife for me. Luckily yours was a bit easier to fix. Are those curly mango scales by the way?
Yes, they are. And the scales are what sold me on the knife. I guess blue must be a color many do not like, because the knife was up for 3+ hours when I sharked it. Honestly, I had no idea what curly mango is, nor that it existed up to that point. Now I'd be hyped to see more of them. Sorry to hear that! And as I didn't see too many Fiddleback scandis in the last months, it must've hurt even more. Heard anything form Rick Lowe regarding the finish? I don't have sheaths for them yet. My plan was to make kydex sheats myself, but that's a to do for the months to come. Edit: Argh, my brain is terribly slow sometimes! And it's harder to put knives to avatars than names to faces, but the blue dyed curly mango bushboot scandi is yours, am I right? ^^
Thank you Ben Rubinstein There are 21 of the discworld novels available. All up to Jingo! It's a special edition by Gollancz. I stumbled over one of the novels in a book shop and asked whether there are any more available. Turned out they were.
I only knew the fruit, but not the wood neither, lol Yes, that is mine. I generally prefer natural non-colored wooden handles but since these are so rare I just jumped on it when it was offered to me. There were some great scandies in the last batch by the way, but you've probably seen those by now. Rick and I are no longer on speaking terms. When I informed him of what happened he simply told me to get some acetone & that that would clean it up, but when that didn't work he just said he didn't know another solution neither and that was that. He didn't even have the decency to apologize for his mistake. I was pretty gutted after that. I contacted Andy to see if he knew a way to clean it up but as it turned out sanding would have been the only solution and I didn't feel comfortable doing that myself with such an expensive knife. So I stewed on it for a couple of days and then decided to go public with it in the Fiddleback forum, figuring that the least I could do was warn others about what could happen to their knife if they'd buy a sheath from him. After that I got a pretty nasty email from Rick in which he started to turn things around and make it sound like I was the bad guy for going public and ruining his business. He did offer to make me a new sheath or to pay for a spa visit (just the treatment, not the shipping back and forth which would have cost about twice as much as the spa treatment alone including customs fees and whatnot) in that same email though, but to me that came across as nothing more than an attempt to save his face on the forum so he could at least claim that he tried to make it right, & I basically told him to stuff it after that. So it's great that you don't have to rely on other people to get a sheath, haha. At least you can only blame yourself if you mess it up somehow
I would have done the same thing after such a reaction from the maker. That's not only unpolite, but unprofessional and it's only right to inform other potential customers about that. Oh, I do actually rely on the help of my more craftsman-y roommate. If only for having somebody to oversee what I'm doing. And informing me on possible stupid mistakes. ^^ And I'll do some testing before, to see whether the heat necessary to mold the kydex could ruin the handles. I'm sure it'll be fun!
Holiday work hours are over, and I've got something new and shiny to show! My Paramilitary 2 family has a new member, the green G-10 with the CTS 204P blade. Courtesy of BobsBargains, who approached me when I was whining how hard it was to find one! Also new and carried with the green Paramilitary the last few days is the Maratac. At this point I have to thank Antithetik again, who made me a death-eater and follower of Voldemort in the first place. And last but not least thanks for the likes johnny five and all the others. Hope you had nice holidays and started well into the new year!
Just because I carried it all week exclusively, my Higo with a special kind of EDC, no unmarried adult should ever be without: Also, the new box I bought for my fixed knives. It's made for kitchen knives, but my fixed knives fit in well. There's still much space left, maybe I'll add another compartment for knife maintenance material or folders.
