I thought about buying the Farson Blade, but I'm not sure. It's based on a stone tool found in the desert. I'm not going to EDC it, but I thought it was pretty cool. What do you guys/ gals think?

I think it's cool, but I tend to purchase blades based on aesthetics alone.

Are there any particular uses where such a blade would be advantageous over a more traditional pocket folder?

It is used for bush crafting. People attach it to an axe handle sized piece of wood carved in the field. Seems to work okay as a chopping device for the given weight. It's not something I plan on buying or using, but the thought of packing in an axe head for some reason always appealed to me.

That curved corner would be much better for skinning and scraping hides. You can chop a little with this as well.

I have to admit I've been thinking about this one myself. If you order direct from Fremont, you can get it in 1095, which is much more appealing to me than the cheap stainless they're using. I would probably opt for the Farson Hatchet, though--similar but with a handle (and also a TiNi coated 1095).

I like it! This would make a cool pack-knife.

It's a neat concept, but I like the TOPS Atax better.
Similar tool, but with more features and a handle.
For somethin else similar, the TOPS S.N.A.P. card knife is great and smaller sized.

IIRC, Recoil magazine did a comparison of the Atax and the Farson last year some time. Might be worth a look for those looking for more information.

Thanks, I'll prolly look into it!
I don't actually have an Atax, admittedly...
I do admire it, and did get to handle it at TOPS' booth at Blade Show.
    I do want one, though.
But I want the SNAP card knife more. :D

I'm really starting to warm up to the idea of one of these. Your thread shows it as shorter than I envisioned, which isn't a bad thing. The sheath looks a little cheap, but that's more a pet peeve than a big deal, too.

I haven't had a chance to work it really hard but the nylon sheath should hold up. I like the idea of the edges being riveted, not just sewn. The only thing I'd like is the ability for ambidextrous sheathing. It appears designed for rear belt carry for a right hander only. I'll probably end up strapping it to my bag rather then belt carry
