One thought on mac and cheese and pasta/rice sides. I just went through my pantry and I have a lot of these, I'm a lazy cook;). But out of about 2 dozen packets of food only the 3 rice sides i have don't call for milk and or butter. I'm sure you can make mac and cheese with just water, but I don't know how it would taste. The "premium" variety might be better, but it's also much pricier.

^ I try to look for the ones that don't "require" milk or butter... Just so that I don't have to worry about them during camp or when cookin' out of my car trunk. They taste alright.

    Bump.

I found this old thread while looking for something else. Interesting read and some good ideas that I thought might be helpful as the tradition backpacking season starts for those of us in the northern hemisphere; hence the bump.

Even those of you that only plan on emergency hiking (BOB, GHB) might enjoy it.

Well, back to my original search.

BTW, lots of these posters are MIA.

I keep a medium size cooler (about the size of a shoebox and a half) filled with homemade backpacking meals, just search for "backpacking meals" or "freezer bag cooking", the three of us will just take off for the woods on a whim so we have everything always ready to go.

Thankfully very few posts included MREs, I've eaten way too many, but here's a little something I like to include:
    2 MRE Pound Cakes
1 Small Can of Cherry Pie Filling
    1 Pint Korbel Brandy

Pour pie filling on the pound cakes, pour 1 shot of brandy on pie filling and light it till it burns off.....drink the rest of the brandy while enjoying "Cherries Jubilee" for desert.:p

Jumped on an offer from 'Food 4 Patriots' a 72 hours food supply: Potato Soup, Chicken and rice and Maple Oatmeal, all add water type. It was free and pay $14 shipping. gives me something more to store now.
